About this listen
When you hear a riveting story, does it thrill your heart and stir your soul? Do you hunger for truth and goodness? Do you secretly relate to Belle's delight in the library in Beauty and the Beast?
If so, you may be on your way to being a book girl.
Books were always Sarah Clarkson's delight. Raised in the company of the lively Anne of Green Gables, the brave Pevensie children of Narnia, and the wise Austen heroines, she discovered reading early on as a daily gift, a way of encountering the world in all its wonder. But what she came to realize as an adult was just how powerfully books had shaped her as a woman to live a story within that world, to be a lifelong learner, to grasp hope in struggle, and to create and act with courage.
She's convinced that books can do the same for you.
Join Sarah in exploring the reading life as a gift and an adventure, one meant to enrich, broaden, and delight you in each season of your life as a woman. In Book Girl, you'll discover how reading can strengthen your spiritual life and deepen your faith; why a journey through classic literature might be just what you need (and where to begin); how stories form your sense of identity; how Sarah's parents raised her to be a reader - and what you can do to cultivate a love of reading in the growing readers around you; and more than 20 annotated book lists, including some old favorites and many new discoveries.
Whether you've long considered yourself a reader or have dreams of becoming one, Book Girl will draw you into the life-giving journey of becoming a woman who reads and lives well.

While there are many books about writing, none deal firsthand with the intersection of songwriting, storytelling, and vocation, along with nuts-and-bolts exploration of the great mystery of creativity. In Adorning the Dark, Andrew describes six principles for the writing life: serving the work, serving the audience, selectivity, discernment, discipline, and community. Through stories from his own journey, Andrew shows how these principles are not merely helpful for writers and artists but for anyone interested in imitating the way the Creator interacts with his creation.

Striving for beauty, art also reveals what is broken. It presents us with the tremendous struggles and longings common to the human experience. And it says a lot about our Creator too. Great works of art can speak to the soul in a unique way. Rembrandt Is in the Wind is an invitation to discover some of the world's most celebrated artists and works and how each of them illuminates something about God, people, and the purpose of life. Part art history, part biblical study, part philosophy, and part analysis of the human experience, this book is nonetheless all story.

Story
Søren Kierkegaard is one of the most passionate and challenging of all modern philosophers, and is often regarded as the founder of existentialism. Over about a decade in the 1840s and 1850s, writings poured from his pen pursuing the question of existence - how to be a human being in the world? - while exploring the possibilities of Christianity and confronting the failures of its institutional manifestation around him.

What is it that you long for? Dream about? Hunger after? We all desire more than just the endurance of our daily routines. But often we feel limited and stuck - like we're merely existing instead of living. That's not the way it was meant to be. God intends the humanity in each of us to be deeply experienced, lavishly enjoyed, and exuberantly celebrated. In fact this is what the Gospel is all about. Yes, the Gospel.

Story
The New York Times best-selling author and trusted spiritual adviser offers a follow up to his classic Care of the Soul. Something essential is missing from modern life. Many who've turned away from religious institutions - and others who have lived wholly without religion - hunger for more than what contemporary secular life has to offer but are reluctant to follow organized religion's strict and often inflexible path to spirituality. In A Religion of One' s Own, best-selling author and former monk Thomas Moore explores the myriad possibilities of creating a personal spiritual style, either inside or outside formal religion.

Ranier Maria Rilke challenges you, "...to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps then, someday far in the future, you will gradually, without even noticing it, live your way into the answers." Rilke's ability to combine the sensual and the spiritual into an inspired vision of the art of living is brought to vivid life in his letters. Through his eyes, the everyday difficulties of love, sex, solitude, sadness, and doubt are seen as the archetypal elements of the drama called life.

Story
Two dozen select prayer poems to learn from and live with. Poetry and prayer are closely related. We often look to poets to give language to our deepest hopes, fears, losses - and prayers. Poets slow us down. They teach us to stop and go in before we go on. They play at the edges of mystery, holding a tension between line and sentence, between sense and reason, between the transcendent, and the deeply, comfortingly familiar. When Poets Pray contains thoughtful meditations by Marilyn McEntyre on choice poems/prayers and poems about prayer.

In a shallow light-speed world, how can we really know and be known by another person? How do we make true friends? The Digital Age is all about change, but the need for true friendship never changes. We are designed for real engagement with others - for affirmation that goes beyond a simple "like" on social media, for connection over meals, for hope and excitement about the future. Above all, we need to be known and accepted for who we are.

Lots of Book Love
To make the most out of this book, you’d probably want to have a physical copy or ebook, so you could refer to the numerous book lists. It does feel like the main point of this book is to offer reading recommendations. It prompted me to check out a couple library books (one hardcover, the other a digital audiobook), so the author was persuasive in her book love!
The narrator did a nice job and made it feel like she was the author herself reading the book and sharing all those recommendations.
One thing I appreciate about Book Girl is how the author addresses the power of stories in our lives and how God can work through them.

Inspirational
This book includes many lists of classic and edifying modern books, organized by seasons of life. There are a number of new-to-me authors I’ll look for based on Clarkson’s recommendation, specifically Elizabeth Goudge. And since A Wrinkle in Time was a childhood favorite, I was excited to learn more about Madeline L’Engle’s Christian works. I purchased the paperback edition for my daughter who is a Book Girl, along with a number of the suggested titles. The lists can be a bit tedious in audiobook form, but the insights into how books impact our lives are worth listening to.

Rave. Rave. Rave.
This is a book about the reading life, and it is filled with important words for novelists, IMHO, as well as all readers, especially for those who are followers of Christ. It is written specifically to girls/women, but I'm sure the truths within would ring just as true to the opposite sex. The lists of recommended reading throughout this book are amazing, but it is the wisdom and encouragement and joy in the rest of the narrative that I have highlighted countless times throughout. It's a book I will return to again, probably multiple times. If you are a book girl, if reading is something you love to do (or want to learn to love to do), treat yourself to BOOK GIRL.

A book about books
Sarah Clarkson has a masterful way of weaving argument, story, and her extensive reading experience together to form a compelling case for reading well. Her picks are deeply Christian and centered on shaping the soul not just the mind! I was greatly influenced by her recommendations and have already finished a few of the titles. She knows what she’s talking about!
The Narrator does an excellent job portraying tone! Her voice is very easy to listen to and she speaks clearly making it easy to speed up without losing content.

The Clarksons never disappoint. This is a great guide through booklists in addition to anecdotal episodes from the writer’s reading journey. Often “Lewis” seemed to jump from the pages; his influence on her writing is evident.
