About this listen

Dimple Lala doesn't know what to think. She's spent her whole life resisting her parents' traditions. But now she's turning 17 and things are more complicated than ever. She's still recovering from a year-old break-up, and her best friend isn't around the way she used to be. Then, to make matters worse, her parents arrange for her to meet a "suitable boy". Of course, it doesn't go well, until Dimple goes to a club and finds him spinning a magical web of words and music. Suddenly the suitable boy is suitable because of his sheer unsuitability. Complications ensue.

This is a story about finding yourself, finding your friends, finding love, and finding your culture, sometimes where you least expect it.

Critic reviews

"The author poetically captures the essence of her characters and the richness of seemingly insignificant moments. Absorbing and intoxicating, this book is sure to leave a lasting impression." (Publishers Weekly)
"A breathtaking experience....The exuberant, almost psychedelic linguistic riffs will catch readers up in a breathtaking experience that is beyond virtually anything being published for teens today." (Kirkus Reviews)

I fell in love with this book in five minuets! It was very well done and very, very intelligent. Gwyn and Dimple are amazing characters who deal with real life circustances. Big ups to Zarah!

super-duper

Great narration, good story, and memorable one-liners for those who listen closely. The book puts you in the head of a 16 just turned 17 yr old intelligent American born Indian girl growing up in Jersey the summer before her Senior year in high school. It speaks to adapting to your culture but it's more than about being Indian.

My daughter " just liked the book" . For me it was a multi-cultural snapshot - Indian, high school, college, big city- and a reminder of high school Summer days, the journey of self discovery, and the importance of being connected to family and friends.

A Delightful Insight

The books story is great however the narrators pronunciation was so poor! and distracting it took away from the book. Very poor choice

Good Book Terrible performance

In defense of this book, I didn't realize it was of the "Judy Blume" ilk. I found the characters shallow, the narration pedantic, the characters stereotypical, and the story unbearable. If you're a teenager, this might be your cup of tea. For me, I stopped listening after the third chapter.

Boorrr-ing
