Critic reviews

"Monroe's Nightmare in Paradise features 31-year-old Renee, a second grade teacher and self-proclaimed 'Miss Goody Two-Shoes' who, with wild best friend Inez, goes to the Caribbean to 'get loose'. Frustration with her own meek nature and an admission by Inez - she slept with Renee's husband before they married - propel Renee into a one-night stand that results in her arrest for prostitution. When husband Leon won't pony up the fine, Renee is jailed for three months - plenty of time to decide who stays in her life.... Bad Luck Shadow [is] set in 1946. [T]he story's hero is Baltimore Floyd, a dashing scoundrel with charisma to burn. Fleeing Harlem and a gambling debt, Baltimore steals into a neon-lit Kansas City, where he holes up in old love Franchetta's cathouse and plans the takedown of a high-stakes card game. McGlothin's tale is sophisticated and sexy, with the plotting and pacing of first-rate noir." ( Publishers Weekly)

Good stories, poor narration performance

Both book are good stories and the only reason I kept listening. Shari Peele performance was good (not great) for Monroe's Nightmare in Paradise. Ezra Knight’s performance is less than poor (if that’s possible) for Bad Luck Shadow. I really struggled to get to the end only to find that the story is cut off mid-scene with no true ending to the story.

I’m so glad this is a free audiobook. It’s not worth a credit or payment.

That first story…..kept me yearning for more!

The story by Mary Monroe was well written and very relatable. I couldn’t wait to get back to it! Book #2 had its moments, but it was mostly slow. Both narrators were pretty good. I’m glad it was complimentary tho. It’s worth the read.

Good

Both short stories were good but I think they ending bad. The ending just cut off and it seems like there was more thet needed to be told before just ending right in the middle. But all in all it was ok.

Monroe 3 stars, But Slow 2nd Book, 2 stars

May Monroe is a great writer. Her book, which was told during the first half of "Borrow Trouble" was well written, and flowed with ease. The narrator was well spoken, kept the listener interested with her voice, and traveled between characters with ease. The second author did not present the material with ease. It was difficult to "get into the main character" named Baltimore, and the narrator (nor the author) was not able to flow easily between the characters. The second book moved much too slowly, was not as well written, worth only 2 stars, and soon I began to lose interest in the storyline, because it seemed to go nowhere fast. These books should not have been combined into one book. Ms. Monroe's book is highly recommended at 3-4 stars alone, and her part of this audible is one that listener's will not forget!

VERY GOOD READ

It's been a while, but I do recall this book. It was a great listen. Worth the chip and recommended. I don't like to get into specifics for fear of being a spoiler so I won't say much except that I enjoyed the story.

Borrowed trouble

The book was good but the second story never ended so I can't say how the whole book was.

Nails on a chalkboard

I cannot stand Ezra Knight’s voice and speech pattern. It’s as if he is gasping for air. He sounds like educated and uncouth. This was probably a very good storyline, but I could not get past that god awful voice.

it's a NO for me!

l listened to the first story in it's entirety and l didn't like it at all. The storyline was extremely weak and moved along at a snail like pace. There was a lot of needless filler. And the end just stop with no true resolution. As for the 2nd story. l am finding it even harder to get into. l don't like how the story just started without a prroper beginning . l may not finish the 2nd story. it's just off in my opinion. So, l basically didn't like either story.

NOPE!

I couldn't believe how horrible the narration was! Especially the Second story!! This must have been earlier in their carriers, they were both off with the narrating cadence and the inflection of their voices. He much more than she. Sometimes it was painful listening to them! Again,Especially Ezra! I wanted to pull the words out of his mouth! it was like listening to a 2ND grader learning to read out loud! I am pleased that I didn't have to pay for this- it would definitely have been returned!
