About this listen

Growing up poor in Texas, Vera Lomax used every gold-digging trick in the book to land a rich husband. Now living in the lap of luxury in San Francisco, her only job is to fawn over her much-older husband, so it's been easy for her to balance a life of shopping and affairs with younger men with a major secret: the 16-year bribery of one of her husband's mistresses to keep her pregnancy under wraps. Vera figures that a little hush money every month will ensure her husband's fortune is hers alone.... Unfortunately for Vera, Sarah Cooper is the child Kenneth Lomax always wanted. When the father she never knew shows up at her mother's funeral to claim her, it's a fairy tale journey from the ghetto to a mansion on a hill. But Sarah's life is not as carefree as her father wants it to be...because Sarah knows from the start that her step-mother is as two-faced as they come. And after losing all the family she's ever known, she wants a life that's richer than what Vera's got planned for her.

Neither woman can be sure who will win Kenneth's heart and fortune. But as Vera and Sarah scheme to get what they want, everyone they know will be choosing sides, taking chances, and gambling it all to come out on top....

Would you listen to Family of Lies again? Why?

This book was awesome to read. It shows how you can never really know a person even if you've been around them for years.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Family of Lies?

The most memorable moment of this book for me is when Sarah finally met her father for the first time.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

Not always. Sometimes the narration was a little off.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I didn't make me laugh or cry.

Any additional comments?

This book definitely left some loose ends untied. Like - why didn't Kenneth ever find out that Vera knew about his daughter all along and had paid Lois to disappear. Also, who was really behind the attack that caused Sarah to lose her baby? Did Bo really turn his ex-wife down when she propositioned him? Collette seemed a little shady to me. What was her real story?

Mary Monroe at her best!

story was very long. it was somewhat captivating. I liked the narrators for Kenneth and Vera, but the other lady's voice didn't really suit the character.

Fair

I’m a fan of the author and narrator’s so the selection was a no brainer. With those few words this book was amazing and I hated to have it end. I hope there can be a part two of how Vera picks up the pieces if she survives her fate.

5 stars for everyone.

I loved the characters, especially Vera and Kenneth!
How they put on a front but spoke honestly under their breath! Vera’s description of people was so funny. It seems like she thought almost everybody was ugly. I laughed throughout the book.

Hilariously Entertaining!

Mary Monroe mrwates very good stories. The unfortunate part of audio books, which I enjoy during my commutes is sometimes the actors are horrible. Whomever read Kenneth and Vera’s parts were horrible.

The actors
