About this listen

Admiral Horatio Hornblower has given Commander William Brewer captaincy of the captured pirate sloop El Dorado.

Now under sail as the HMS Revenge, its new name suits Brewer's frame of mind perfectly. He lost many of his best men in the engagement that seized the ship, and his new orders are to hunt down the pirates who have been ravaging the trade routes of the Caribbean sea. But Brewer will face more than one challenge before he can confront the pirate known as El Diabolito. His best friend and ship's surgeon, Dr. Spinelli, is taking dangerous solace in alcohol as he wrestles with demons of his own.

The new purser, Mr. Allen, may need a lesson in honest accounting. Worst of all, Hornblower has requested that Brewer take on a young ne'er-do-well, Noah Simmons, to remove him from a recent scandal at home. At 23, Simmons is old to be a junior midshipman, and as a wealthy man's son he is unaccustomed to working, taking orders, or suffering privations.

William Brewer will need to muster all his resources to ready his crew for their confrontation with the Caribbean's most notorious pirate. In the process, he'll discover the true price of command.

Brewer Takes Us on Another Exciting Adventure

The fun on the high seas continue Whereas I thought the first book was to layout the world and the people playing in it, this one really pushed the plot and had a lot more excitement. Everything that worked great in the first book was amped up for a much more action packed adventure.. This book stands alone just fine, but you would prefer this one much more reading them in order. I’m really excited to see what more is ahead for Captain Brewer and the rest of the crew.

The crew is back and I enjoyed all of them more than I did the first time. They continue to develop nicely and provide a spectacular character driven story. Their dialogue was great and I enjoyed being a part of all of their conversations. Brewers romantic interest was especially interesting and I look forward to hearing out that pans out. I really hope that the action they face moving forward continues to intensify because I really enjoyed fighting the pirates, firing the cannons, and swabbing the decks with the crew again.

This is a fantastic production. It came off as a full production with sound effects and different people playing each character, however there is only one narrator. Nigel has a huge range of character voices and did an amazing job. He doesn’t just read the words, but acts out the entire story. I felt like I was listening to a play enfold before me. His narrations are truly a step above all the others. The background sound effects really added to the overall story and I was able to picture myself on the ship. I can’t imagine the energy and effort that was needed to put into this narration, but you owe it to yourself to listen.

I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

I loved it!

I love all sorts of Historical fiction, but especially naval historical fiction. I have read all of the Aubry Maturin series, the Hornblower series and so many more. James Keffer is a fantastic writer, but I think what makes these books truly great is Nigel Peever's narration. It is rare to find an audiobook with foley work like this. It's almost like an old school radio drama. The book really comes alive.
I will listen to these books again.

A Wonderful Adventure

I had a friend who recommended that I listen to a book narrated by Nigel Peever. I checked out his narrations and this story instantly grabbed my attention. This audiobook is enhanced with sound effects. I quite enjoyed them and made the story more "3D." Peever has such a range of distinct voices that you feel you are listening to a multi cast production. I already have another book of his lined up because he is so talented.

The story itself was fabulous. It was fast paced from start to finish and an amazing Caribbean adventure, with pirates. If you love historical fiction, Pirates of the Caribbean or similar stories, I believe you will really enjoy this book. I only found out after listening that it was a second in a series. I had no idea. It reads like a complete stand alone. If that is your hold up with trying it, do not let that stop you. This story and the narration are very well matched.

I received a copy of this audiobook at my request, and I have voluntarily left this review.

excellent performance of a sea adventure

First off, I want to give this type of audiobook a big thumbs up. There is a nostalgic feeling to this that harkens one back to the days of radio dramas. This is NOT a straight reading but a reading performance complete with sound effects and distinctive voices. If you haven't tried this type of audiobook, I highly recommend it.

This book is a great match to this type of format as the historical sea adventure melds really well with a performance versus a straight reading. I haven't read the first book in this series but I didn't have any problem knowing immediately what was going on. James Keffer writes a solid adventure but also fleshes out the personalities of the characters involved.

Nigel Peever is a highly skilled narrator who is very well suited to this type of audiobook. I think he would do well in a straight reading also but he really shines in this full performance format. He is in my top five narrators of all time. I admit, I'm a big fan of each character having their own voice and Peever excels at this.

A Wonderful Adventure

This was a wonderful listen of high seas adventure! Know that this is an enhanced story, meaning it has sound effects. If you don't like that type of audiobook then pass this one by, though you'll be missing out. However if you enjoy audiobooks with enhancements then you need to hear this one! There's action, adventure, battle and a plenty of nautical nostalgia. The narration by Nigel Peever was awesomely done. I love Mr. Peever's narrations and this one does not disappoint! His sound effects, voices and emotions truly make this a highly entertaining escape from life. This is a wonderful listen that I will be recommending to my friends.

Epic Tale

I would not have picked this book up if it were not for the narrator. Nigel Peever is one of my absolute favorite narrators because he turns every book into an entire production. Brewer’s Revenge is an epic tale of piracy on the high seas and is not my usual chosen reading, but true to form Mr. Peever made it quite pleasant to listen to. I hate giving too much away, but I must say that I came to think of the door as its own character, and it even made me chuckle at times. Also, the battle scenes were amazing. There were often times that I wanted to duck myself even knowing I was sitting safely in my living room.

As for the story, it is second in a series, but other than some background on the characters, I do not feel that I missed anything from not reading the first in the Hornblower Legacy series. I do wish that there had been a bit more of the love story, but then again, I may not be the typical targeted audience.

I’m glad I was given the opportunity to read this book as I would not have picked it up on my own and I love expanding my reading horizons.

I was provided with a free copy of this audio book for my honest review. The views expressed here are entirely my own.

This is an excellent story!

The writing and narration are both fantastic in this tale of the open seas complete with pirates and ocean battles. How can you not love that?
