About this listen

One murdered, one missing. Both are almost identical.

Detective Nik Pohl has seen every shade of darkness in his career. Not used to playing by the rules, he finds himself frozen out by his superiors. What’s worse, now he’s being blackmailed by a shadowy businessman into investigating a seemingly crimeless disappearance.

A young woman, Viola, left her home months ago, leaving a letter to her parents saying she wouldn’t be coming back. With a little digging Nik discovers the case of an almost identical-looking woman, who went missing in similar circumstances. There’s one important difference: that woman is dead. Viola may still be alive... but perhaps not for much longer.

When Nik is viciously attacked, it becomes clear that whoever is behind Viola’s disappearance has some high-level connections, and they will stop at nothing to shut him down. But he’s in too deep and the clock is ticking. He has to find Viola, and her captors, before it’s too late.

Excellent

just as good, if not better, than any current thriller/murder mystery. Having lived in Germany, I loved the scenes and the characters.

Confusing plot

I listened to the book. Narrator is very good. I am still confused about who John is and what did he want Nik to solve and why? Maybe I would have understood it if I had been reading it!

Good book

This was a pretty decent read. Being that it was translated from another language, some of the names were hard to keep up with. I'm glad I listened to it instead of read it on kindle. The story wasn't predictable and the main characters circle was likable enough that you felt bad if 1 or 2 of them died. Good read.

different

Enjoyable and different as it's been translated to English so gives it a different feel from American or British writers. storyline was interesting and characters were good, quirky and enough information to know them but not over done. The writing is enjoyable and would suit anyone who enjoys a detective novel that isn't too verbose or graphic . Will definitely look for another from the author.

Lost in translation

I have read plenty of crime dramas and thrillers and this bad cop story seems too ridiculous, with too little bound in reality. A cop with a history of beating and pulling his weapon in public constantly against strangers? Fired. Book ends. Fin. But I don’t know the German police system. Second, there are parts that seem lost in translation with repetitive English phrases that should have been more artfully written.

Just not my cup of tea... maybe old and cranky

Did not care for the narration and the story jumps too fast for me. I listened but didn't retain much. I'm just too old and cranky for this.

ok book

the book does not provide much depth to the story even in its lame attempt at the end to tie up the loose strings to the plot. the narrator was mediocre at best, definitely did not add anything to the story.

Horrible-no wonder it was on sale

If I could have returned this book I would have. I didn't get more than an hour in before I couldn't stand it any longer.

I just couldn’t get into this book no matter how much I kept forcing myself to keep listening. Finally stopped half way through

couldn't keep my attention

This book could not keep my attention. I got half way through and couldn't remember anything on the story line or plot, so I have up on it.
