Publisher's summary

A Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, and Amazon Charts bestseller.

“Lisa Gray explodes onto the literary stage with this taut, edge-of-the-seat thriller, and her headstrong protagonist, Jessica Shaw, reminiscent of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher, delivers a serious punch.” - Robert Dugoni, New York Times bestselling author

Private investigator Jessica Shaw is used to getting anonymous tips. But after receiving a photo of a three-year-old kidnapped from Los Angeles twenty-five years ago, Jessica is stunned to recognize the little girl as herself.

Eager for answers, Jessica heads to LA’s dark underbelly. When she learns that her biological mother was killed the night she was abducted, Jessica’s determined to solve a case the police have forgotten. Meanwhile, veteran LAPD detective Jason Pryce is in the midst of a gruesome investigation into a murdered college student moonlighting as a prostitute. A chance encounter leads to them crossing paths, but Jessica soon realizes that Pryce is hiding something about her father’s checkered history and her mother’s death.

To solve her mother’s murder and her own disappearance, Jessica must dig into the past and find the secrets buried there. But the air gets thinner as she crawls closer to the truth, and it’s getting harder and harder to breathe.

Entertaining enough

This book was performed well. I got intrigued right away and the story took off well enough, but I feel the author felt rushed at the end. The main character suddenly became stupid and forgot all the danger previously pointed out to her. it was free.

Narrator distracts from the story

Hard to follow the story because I'm so distracted by the narrator's attempt at imitating men's voices. Had to stop listening and finished reading the book on my Kindle instead.

Whose That? Difficult to maintain interest.

The characters in this book frequently had two and in one case three names. It was very difficult to keep a tab on who was who. The story seemed to meander at times only to get stuck in minute detail such as Jessica took off her clothes, went into the shower, turned on the water, at Cetera at Cetera. So many people with so many names all without development as to who they really were and if they were of any importance. I wanted to stop often but plowed on. When the culprit came to light I had no idea who they were as they had been mentioned so briefly and as I said, without much development of the of the character. I am not interested in the second installation of this series.

Cringe worthy

The narrator made the book almost unbearable. I have listened to many audible books. None were worse than this.

Good story, but I didn't like the narrator's style

I liked the story overall. Several twists. I just didn't care for the narrator's style. A bit monotone, and often sentences ended on an odd up tone.

Readers annunciation and oration is terrible!

Performance isn't worth a decent book. reader is really terrible with an incredible lack of relaying speech with with any clue about people talk.

Satisfactory.....

A reasonable series start, somewhat unfinished......watch for follow on book(s)...better editing is needed to make 5 stars.

A wonderful story.

It had me hooked from the first chapter. It has suspense, romance, and even some comedy. I really enjoyed the way it was read, even the different changes in voice for different characters. I listened every chance I could. Great book.
