About this listen

An Amazon Charts bestseller.

To a cunning serial killer, she was the one that got away. Until now...

FBI Special Agent Nina Guerrera escaped a serial killer’s trap at sixteen. Years later, when she’s jumped in a Virginia park, a video of the attack goes viral. Legions of new fans are not the only ones impressed with her fighting skills. The man who abducted her 11 years ago is watching. Determined to reclaim his lost prize, he commits a grisly murder designed to pull her into the investigation...but his games are just beginning. And he’s using the internet to invite the public to play along.

His coded riddles may have made him a depraved social media superstar - an enigmatic cyber-ghost dubbed “the Cipher” - but to Nina he’s a monster who preys on the vulnerable. Partnered with the FBI’s preeminent mind hunter, Dr. Jeffrey Wade, who is haunted by his own past, Nina tracks the predator across the country. Clue by clue, victim by victim, Nina races to stop a deadly killer while the world watches.

Critic reviews

“The survivor of a vicious crime confronts her fears in a hunt for a serial killer…forensic analysis, violent action, and a tough heroine who stands up to the last man on earth she wants to see again.” --Kirkus Reviews

“[In] this riveting series launch from Maldonado…the frequent plot twists will keep readers guessing to the end, and Maldonado draws on her 22 years in law enforcement to add realism. Determined to overcome her painful past, the admirable Nina has enough depth to sustain a long-running series.” --Publishers Weekly

“A heart-pounding novel from page one, The Cipher checks all the boxes for a top-notch thriller: sharp plotting, big stakes, and characters - good and bad and everywhere in between - that are so richly drawn you’ll swear you’ve met them. I read this in one sitting and I guarantee you will too. Oh, another promise: You’ll absolutely love the Warrior Girl!” --Jeffery Deaver, New York Times bestselling author

Pretty Good

Audible says 3 stars means "pretty good," which is a reasonable description of this book. The characters and plot held my interest for about 10 1/2 hours. But I hope the FBI is not as incompetent as it's portrayed. There's no way a victim should investigate a crime, and the Cypher, who seems extraordinarily well equipped for causing mayhem, runs rings around the Bureau for most of the book. Roxanne Hernandez did a professional job of narration, which helped. Overall, it was pretty good but not good enough for me to want to pick up another Nina Guerrera book.

Good story, well written, enjoyable

I read another review about the narrator so it was one of the things I first noticed. Yes, this reader (who really did a good job) was soft-spoken for a lead character who was tough as nails but after a while you don’t think of it. The FBI hunt seemed completely believable. They didn’t magically find the “unsub” and had to work hard to solve the crime(s). I enjoyed it and hope this new team comes back in other books to come.

Long Drives or Pesky Chores, This is the book!

I listen to a lot of books because it seems I'm always driving or hiking or doing pesky chores around the house. I started listening to this book one day as I was cleaning my house for a party. You know what that's like, right? It takes all day long because you know everyone is going to be judging you so you have to do a really good job? I pressed play and got to cleaning. I was drawn in right away. I like when I get drawn in instantly, not like in fifty shades of grey where you had to read a hundred pages before it started to get good (I still have never finished that trilogy).
Ms. Maldonado did a fabulous job developing the characters. I never once had to back up wondering which character she was talking about. She did such a good job describing the scene I could picture everything and each character perfectly in my mind. I can totally see young Jennifer Lopez playing the part of Nina in a movie version.
Ms. Hernandez knocked the characters out of the park. I knew exactly who was talking and I don't recall her ever falling out of character or carrying over into another character with her voice.
If you like stories that have a few twists and turns and a little suspense thrown in, then this book is well worth the credit. I'm excited that it is Book 1 and I can't wait for Book 2. I am a true crime fanatic and if you are too, this book will be right up your (fictional) alley.

Twisted, Fast Paced Crime Mystery

I enjoyed this twisted, fast-paced crime thriller. I loved the main character, warrior girl Nina! She embodies the word survivor and won't stop until they stop the bad guy, her former abductor. Despite all that has happened to her, she manages to maintain a kind heart.

The narrator, Roxanne Hernandez, has a sweet, young-sounding voice which isn't a great match for tough Nina who survived abusive foster homes and is a survivor of a violent crime. I was able to put that aside and thoroughly enjoy this book!

Glad I didn’t give up

I almost gave up on this book because of the narrator, but I could tell early on it was a good story. Different from other crime dramas. I’m glad I didn’t give up. I plan on listening to more of this series.
