Dr. Trevor James didn't want or expect anything from anybody. He worked every free minute he had and kept himself shut off from almost everybody. He had no intention on living his life any other way after losing the love of his life. Everything was going according to his plan until two interruptions started to change his way of thinking: his father's illness and Ryann Payne.
Ryann Payne lived a life of simplicity. She was happy with her modest life as a bartender and living a life where she answered to nobody. She surrounded herself with the things that she loved, never taking anything for granted after losing what she loved most before. The last thing she expected was to meet Trevor, Mr. Intense.
Both Trevor and Ryann find out though that no matter how broken you are, there still might be someone out there that can mend you and maybe, just maybe, bring you the happiness you deserved all along. If you let it, that is.

Brokenhearted by Brooklyn Taylor. KU Read and Listen program borrow/listen. Dual POV. Dual style narration. Slow burn, contemporary romance. It's listed as 5 hours 58 minutes; I listened at speed 2.50 for 2 hours 23 minutes. Narrators Joe Arden and Maxine Mitchell both read well, but I'm not a fan of the TX accent Maxine adopted. Content warnings: Leah lied to Trevor (she was never pregnant) and cheated on him before her tragic death; Jake abused and cheated on Ryann before she kicked him out (no on page DV); Trevor's father William died of pancreatic cancer; and Lewis is a recovering alcoholic who is revealed to be Ryann's biological father.
Location: Austin, TX
Dr. Trevor Evan James (28; aka Trev) was estranged from his parents for almost a decade. He and his father had fallen out over Leah. Trevor believed Leah was the love of his life, and he changed his plans when she told him she was pregnant. William, Trevor's father, tried to convince Trevor Leah wasn't the one for him, but Trevor loved her and ignored William. When Leah died in a car accident and it was revealed she wasn't pregnant and was cheating on him, Trevor was devastated and moved far away from his father. Almost a decade later, he returns home because his father is ill and his mother needs his help. Ryann Payne (24; aka Ry) was raised by her hardworking single mother, never knowing her father. She's an adult with daddy issues struggling with a verbally and physically abusive cheating boyfriend. Sadie, her best friend, called her to let her know Jake, Ryann's boyfriend, is cheating on her. Ryann sees them for herself, then went home and threw all of his stuff out of her mobile home. Jake went home to find Ryann had evicted him, and after a screaming match, he finally left. She gave up her dream of being a veterinarian because of him and is now a bartender who volunteers on Trevor's parents' horse farm where Jackie, Ryann's aunt, works. Their love story is a bit disjointed, but in the end, they are married and living at the James' stables. Lewis, Ryann's biological dad, and Tammy, her mom, got married and are traveling together. Maxwell and Sadie are no longer together, and Ryann doesn't know why Sadie broke up with Maxwell. Sadie and Mawell find their HEA in 'Cold Hearted.'

We spend more than half the book waiting to see why the hero is so broken, and why he has forsaken his family, specially his father, and everything else to do with love.
Well, after all the wait, when we finally find out why he was the way he was all I wanted to do was present him with the world's tiniest violinist playing a sad tune just for him! Geez! What a selfish immature @$$! I can understand resentment of some kind when you are young and you think you have been wronged, but forsaking his family the way he did and for the reason he did it after so much time passes? Nope, just no!
The heroine also goes through difficult times, but she stands up and keeps going. She was Miss Sunshine to the hero, but I just couldn't see them working out as a couple. I simply didn't connect with them. For me they didn't have the right chemistry.
I see many good reviews, so don't let my less than stellar opinion stop you from listening.
The narrators are two of my favorite and they were great! The book book was just not for me.
