About this listen

It's the middle of a sweltering late-summer heat wave in Los Angeles. In the nearby mountains, a seasonal wildfire burns out of control. If not for this fire, authorities might never have discovered wreckage of an Alfa Romeo convertible - or the body of the car's driver - in the dense underbrush at the bottom of Topanga Canyon. But when firefighters happen across the crash site while battling the nearby blaze, it's only a matter of time and basic forensics before the apparent accident is upgraded to homicide. Gregor Tavlin, a southern California celebrity fitness guru, has been murdered. As far as anyone knows Tavlin had no enemies. And the closest thing to a suspect in the case has disappeared.

Such is the spark that touches off Burn.

The fire requires only fuel.

And everybody has their flash point.

Narrator ruined the story

The narrator was not good. He mispronounced Spanish names and sir names. His cadence was very awkward and difficult to tolerate.

Convoluted

I found the story to be confusing and convoluted. There were way too many side stories that didn't seem to bring anything of relevance to the story.

Great story! Vocal performance could use a bit of inflection

Great mystery and wonderful characters. Unfortunately Basil reads the story like you would read a random article from the newspaper. Flat, dull and with very little expression.

It’s a toss up

A tremendously busy story with lots of loving parts. It was a struggle to follow it at times. Many subplots, tangential issues and diverging story lines make for a book that requires your full attention to keep track of who is who. I must admit I had to go back a few times to remember who this person is and how he/she fit into the general arc of the story.

The protagonist - such as he was - was a disappointment in some aspects. I thought he would have done more to shape the ending of the story, but alas. The author gradually wrote him out of the story towards the end. Would I recommend it to others? Sure; especially if you like mystery with little action or edge of your seat suspense.

Can’t do it

I just can’t get into this story. Maybe I’m just not listening carefully, I don’t know. Too many characters for me. Too confusing.

Terrible narration

I enjoy Sean Doolittle's books immensely. this narrator, however, read so horribly that I found it impossible to follow the thread of the story. Short, staccato bursts of words with all the wrong inflections, an so slowly! I got through it after several false starts, figured out the gist of the plot, but cannot recall any specifics accurately because I find the narration so repulsive, it couldn't hold my interest.

Worst book I have listened to on audible

The storyline was hard to follow, it jumped all over the place, you never knew what was happening & you didn’t know the characters & how they fit into the story. I was confused from the very beginning. I didn’t want to give it 1 star, but I couldn’t submit without a rating.Thank God it was free or I would have requested a refund.

Damn, should've read the reviews (No Spoilers)

No spoilers because I couldn't get past the first 45 minutes... good Lawd, I've documented narrator's names in the past to look up other books they've narrated. NOT THIS TIME... this time it's to ban him!

Definitely not keeping.

Narrator gave me a headache

This might be a good story, but I couldn't listen to the narrator. I gave it 45 minutes but his voice is like an ice pick in my ear. Too bad; might have been a good listen.
