About this listen

It is an obsession that has haunted Nick Malick for seven years - to avenge the murder of his young son. In his gut Malick knows who did it. But the psychopath is in prison for another crime, scheduled to be released in a year. All Malick has to do is wait...and survive.

The tragedy cost Malick his marriage and his career. Now he scrapes by as a PI in the blue-collar town of Cain City, West Virginia. His latest case tasks him with finding a young woman gone missing. Seems simple enough. But when his investigation exposes a link between a corrupt police force and a drug gang from Detroit, Cain City explodes. And Malick finds himself dead center.

Turns out when there's no one to trust and a whole lot of people want you dead, survival and revenge aren't so easy.

Cash City is Jonathan Fredrick's debut novel, heralding a tough new voice in crime fiction.

Loved every minute of it! Highly recommend.

I really enjoyed this! Mr. Fredrick tells a compelling story with twists and turns that feel real, not forced. His main character is sympathetic and even likable despite his many flaws. The plot is new and original for a genre that can often feel like you're heard the basic story before -- this one tells the classic detective thriller in a new way, while giving off that old school noir vibe. Another reviewer mentioned that the language was a turn off -- I didn't find this to be so at all. I would liken it more to the difference between watching a show on Network television (like CBS OR NBC) vs one on HBO or Netflix -- the language felt real and authentic to the story/characters rather than watered down for sensitive ears. It is more like watching The Wire or True Detective over something like NCIS. Like anything else, it isn't for everyone, but if you like crime fiction or a gripping thriller Cash City provides a really well written compelling ride!

Great Story

Reminded me of a modern day version of the hard boiled detective novels of old. Think Sam Spade in modern times. I sat in my car after arriving home after a long drive, in my driveway, listening to the story on more than one occasion. Very entertaining.

I can't wait for more!

Great story! I thoroughly enjoyed "Cash City" with all of its surprise and complexity. If you like crime thrillers, this is the book for you. Mr. Frederick does an outstanding job intertwining the characters the setting and the story into a superior read. I can't wait to see what more he provides his fans in the future.

Couldn’t stop listening.

I loved this book. I read through the reviews and saw a few about the language used in this book. Could the cursing have been avoided? Maybe. It would not have read that same. The spot on narrative and the descriptive grammar helped to set the tone. You could picture Cash City and the people in it. It drew you in and had me saying “just 5 more minutes!” because it was so hard to hit stop.
Very well written. The story was engaging.
I have only one question. When is book 2 coming out?

Decent story

Typical retired gritty cop turned PI. Listened all the way through. Review requires these words.

Great story. Great narrator.

This was my first Jonathan Frederick book. Not sure how I stumbled on it. I love Ari Fliakos as a narrator. The story and characters were great.

Good story, good characters, excellent reading

Another detective story but a good one, hope there are more to come. Excellent reading by Ari Fliakos - only a few readers really can give different voices to different characters.
