About this listen

Rosa, also known as Red Riding Hood, is done with wolves and woods.

Hou Yi the Archer is tired, and knows she's past her prime.

They would both rather just be retired, but that's not what the world has ready for them.

When deadly sunbirds begin to ravage the countryside, threatening everything they've both grown to love, the two must join forces. Now blessed and burdened with the hindsight of middle age, they begin a quest that's a reckoning of sacrifices made and mistakes mourned, of choices and family, and the quest for immortality.

Present Bogged Down by the Past

The focus on the past made the present suffer. The exploration of the pasts of these characters was interesting, but the bulk of the present-day plot was underexplored or explained or just not as engaging as I wanted it to be. Interesting overlay of ideas, though.

A Thrilling Configuration of Fairy Tales!!

The reader did such an amazing job, and every second of this novella is a joy to my fairy-tale-obsessed heart!! Another remarkable triumph from S.L. Huang!!

Thrilling Fairytale, I Only Wish it Was Longer!

I loved this little book, it was so emotional and compelling. My only complaint is I wish it was longer! The way the author mixes fairytales into a fantastic story of blood, betrayal, and love was incredible.

Also, the narrator did lovely. For some reason her narration reminded me of the voice actress for GLaDOS, and I actually LOVED that.

Fairy tales blended with Asian sentiment

This was an interesting blending of LGBTQ characters with Asian mythology and European fairy tales like Red Riding Hood, Beauty and the Beast, Goldilocks, and Puss in Boots. I’m not entirely sure I understood the moral to the story, or what seemed to be deeper symbolism for fulfilling societal expectations or the true nature of good and evil. Part of my difficulty was with the time jumps, which seemed designed to obscure the reveals (and apparently succeeded too well with me). My other difficulty is that I never invested in any of the characters enough to truly care about their fate.
