About this listen

Standalone novel, cowboy romance.

"No one falls in love by choice, it is by chance. No one stays in love by chance, it is by work. And no one falls out of love by chance it is by choice."

By Chance, No Choice, a BWWM romance novel written by Author Xyla Turner, love is sparked from a distance yet struggles to stay ignited. Tess and JD cross paths at a conference by chance. One steamy night turned into an extended vacation, the chemistry that was created during their time spent together couldn't be ignored. JD knows that she is the one, never feeling so sure about anything in life prior to meeting Tess. But she doesn't believe him, her past hinders her from experiencing real love.

While working in New York as the vice-president of a technology start-up, she's highly successful and skilled in her field, whereas JD calls all the shots as CEO of Can-It Corporations in Iowa. In By Chance, No Choice, the couple repeatedly tries to establish a solid foundation for a lasting relationship but being miles apart, having different goals in life and inconsistent communication, it isn't the easiest thing to do.

😒

New York, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Iowa, Michigan, Florida, Ohio... did I miss any? Too many goddamn states in this story. All of these places were PLACEHOLDERS not richly written settings. The MCs were travelling business types. The mmc probably wasn’t supposed to sound like a greasy windbag all the time, but he did. Thanks to the demented narrator there was absolutely no authenticity in the man voice. Imagine some dude going down on you while trying to sell you an ‘06 Kia. That’s what JD sounded like.

The mfc was a total bltch. She had two settings: glacial and lava. She goes from “don’t talk to me in public” to deep throating him and gagging on it. She was a corporate pod person who thought working for some random company was a holy mission (Hey Tess they don’t care about you, they’ll fire you without notice and cannibalize your cubicle). FFS. The book should have been called 'when daddy issues make you a mean workaholic'. This woman never showed her man an ounce of love the entire book.

Anyway, there are only, like, 5 authors that write readable BWWM (or any black interracial) where the mfc actually has black traits and this is one of them. So I’m still a fan. And on the plus side this story did have some good dirty scenes.

Cringy, but a good story

This is one of those Xyla Turner romances with a blunt, hardnosed redneck that falls for a fiercely independent black woman. I enjoyed reading them from her "Across the Aisle" series with Trent and James. It was nice to be hands-free for once and hear it on audio. However, this hero, JD likes to refer to his woman, Tess, as "Mama" ***shudder*** and leaves me uneasy as he talks about whipping her as the narrator tells the story in a car salesman-like southern accent.
Xyla Turner can still tell a good story as she takes us on a journey with the determined JD working his way to assure Tess that their love can withstand a long distance relationship. It's a 3.5 star story.
But seriously, how did this woman let this dude get away with calling her "Mama"? I would have shut that mess down from the beginning no matter how hot he was or how sentimental his reason behind it is.
