This was even more than I expected it to be. It's about Ronan but it's really about the three Lynch brothers. It's about identity, and how your identity is measured against and reflected by the other people in your family or circle. It's about destiny versus choice. Hennessey and her girls are a perfect counterpoint to the Lynch brothers - acting almost as one unit rather than diametrically opposed like the brothers. The book is subtle, especially for a book about Ronan. It's full of feelings and fears, things assumed and then proven incorrect. It packs a few real gutpunches too. I actually shed tears on Declan's behalf - a thing I never thought I could be moved to do.

I don't think you'll get the full emotional payout if you hadn't read The Raven Cycle, but it is a good book. If you read the short story Opal which comes right before this book, then this book, that would deepen its impact for the reader.

Stiefvater's writing is growing in maturity and nuance - this book is a real tour de force!

I’m sorry to say that I just didn’t get into this book as I have a huge bias against books with a major terrorist type plot with the evil government sanctioned murderers.
Sad, as I liked the returning (gotta take MS’ word for status) closeness between Ronan and Declan, and the intro to the Hennessey gang. I have no doubt Stiefvater has the chops to make something of this storyline for a trilogy. I’ll probably revisit this in the future.
I Loved Will Patton’s previous narration of the Raven Cycle and I can’t tell you what it is, but just that something is missing in this recording. Except for Bride. Patton seems to nail him really well.

Call Down the Hawk The Dreamer Trilogy, Book 1 by Magge Syiefvater exceeded my expectations. This book was recommended to me by someone whose opinion I value and I had high expectations. I usually avoid book series and I do not read a lot of Young Adult selections. However, this story warrants further exploration and at the same time the book can also stand on its own. The story definitely transports the reader into a world that is at the intersection of harsh reality and dreams. I liked the way that the dream objects and dreamers were nestled into the more familiar world. The author blends and contrasts elements of magic and harsh reality to great effect. Listening to the Audiobook definitely enhances the experience. The narration performance by Will Patton is very strong and his vocal choices define the mood and deliver the story vividly. I would recommend this book to fans of art, dreams, and fantasy fiction.

Call Down the Hawk is a story about dreams. The weight of dreams, the consequences of bringing your dreams to life, and why dreams are worth fighting for, and also why they are dangerous under the wrong control. It is the most powerful piece of literature I have ever read, even if I can't get the rest of the world to read it. But that’s ok. It’s not for the rest of the world. This book is for the dreamers.

I am so in love with every word this dreamer crafts. Each character is full and lovely, both harshly real and ethereally mythic. Only tree when you’re ready to be forever changed, friends.

Will Patton is masterful and able to make me burst out laughing at inopportune times with his delivery. Maggie stiefvater is also masterful and these books just rock my world as someone with a very active dream life and a love of modern fantasy.

this is my new favorite Trilogy

So, I rarely write reviews on Audible. I usually do them on Goodreads, but this book killed me with its narration. I love Maggie Stiefvater, and I really liked this story, but there were several things about this narrator that just about made this book impossible to finish.

1. Ronan Lynch may have Irish ancestry, but he was born and raised in a rural Virginia town in the mountains. He WOULD NOT speak like he is from Boston, or wherever the accent was supposed to be from. The accent of Ronan was terrible by this narrator. In fact, there were several accents that were terrible. Hennessy is supposed to be British, but the "British" accent would come and go. Also, the men vs. women voices were terrible. There are some people who are made to narrate audio books, and I just don't think this fella is one of them.

2. There were pauses that made it seem like it was the end of the section, and then he kept talking. It was distracting, and, as I stated with the accents, made it difficult to listen to, and it was very disjointed.

So, while I (unlike others) really liked the story, the narrator is AWFUL. Please have someone redo this narration.
