About this listen

It's more than 20 years since Spider Robinson revealed the existence of Callahan's Crosstime Saloon, and the original bar is gone. Mike Callahan is gone, too, but his spirit lives on in the new bar, named Mary's Place for his daughter. On this particular day, nothing seems to be going right for Jake Stonebender, proprietor of Mary's Place. First a huge storm rips the roof off the bar, and moments later, drops another, better roof on it. Then, Mary Callahan and her husband show up, unconscious, literally out of nowhere, and they bring bad news to the barfolk: a nasty three-eyed, three-toed, three-everythinged purple monster is going to descend upon them within mere hours. Through laughter and tears, with puns powerful enough to melt Formica, the most famous bar in all spacetime is going to rock this night. But will the Earth survive?©1996 Spider Robinson (P)2006 Blackstone Audiobooks Fantasy Fiction Science Fiction Funny Witty

Critic reviews

  • Audie Award Finalist, Science Fiction, 2007

"What Robinson's many fans look for above all is humor, wordplay, and a complicated web of allusions to favorite rock lyrics, classic SF stories and previous Callahan tales. They get plenty of each here and should feel right at home, again." (Publishers Weekly)

You can't go wrong with Spider Robinson's Callahan Series. This one is especially good. It is sort of a Canterbury Tales of Callahan's. I have to warn the listener, it is definitely R rated due to sexual content.

good stuff

We really enjoyed the book and better yet was having the author perform the reading

Book & reading correction performed are excellent

There are so many puns, palindromes and lyrics I could hardly keep up! I would love to visit Mary's Place and have a round or two with the client?le. Don't start this in the evening if you have to get up the next morning - you won't want to stop until the end! I can't wait to listen to it again and may end up buying a print copy.

Hysterically funny

I really liked the story, and I didn't realize until now that it was the author who read it. I realized this as I was checking out a new Heinlein book that has just been released. The only problem I had with the reader is that he didn't use an Irish accent for Calahan. Calahan only had a few sentences in the book but there was no Irish accent. As far as the rest of it goes it was perfect. Fast Eddy's story was a bit disturbing but I could handle it. Well done

Liked it alot

This was a very cute book about a bunch of misfits in a bar and unusual things that happen to them. I laughed a lot.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. Funny and good action. He comes up with some wild humor/sci-fi stories. There's always a twist.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Probably a tossup between Jake (the narrator), The Lucky Duck (who can toss three coins and have them all land On Edge (and On Top Of Each Othe))r, and Doc, who comes up with the best jokes and puns.

Have you listened to any of Spider Robinson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

All the Callahan's stories are great. I think that's all that's available audible. Didn't like the Lady's books were as good, and I've read a few of his other stories that were stinkers

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me laugh a lot (that what it was written for). Major character death's made me very sad. I didn't cry much, but I rarely cry at a book. This one was written for humor anyway.

Any additional comments?

Not really, except if you like the first one, the quality is consistent and you'll probably like 'em all.

Callahans is a true classic

As of this writing, I’m only 20 minutes into the story, yet I’ve laughed more than in the previous 50 Audible titles I bought. If the story ended right now, it’s *well* worth what I spent for it. It’s wonderful…especially if you’re a guy who’s ever had a pregnant wife. Buy this book!!!!

THE BEST EVER, FULL STOP!
