About this listen
It’s 1898, and one of history’s most abundant gold discoveries has shaken awake the desolate city of Cape Nome, Alaska.
This monumental find by John Brynteson, Jafet Lindeberg, and Erik Lindblom earns them the moniker of the Three Lucky Swedes.
News of their good fortune spreads swiftly, and by the summer of 1900, tens of thousands of dreamers trek over land and by sea to the mines surrounding Anvil Creek and upon the Bering Sea beaches, where gold deposits pepper the soft sands.
Cape Nome chronicles the continuing adventures of Percy Hope, following his exploits two years earlier in Hope City. Percy, now a journalist for William Randolph Hearst’s San Francisco Examiner, is sent on assignment to Nome to report on the next great stampede.
Along the way, Percy encounters and befriends the legendary gunman Wyatt Earp and his spirited wife, Josephine, as well as an assemblage of amusing, disarming, and sinister characters, including a sea monster known as the Qalupalik.
Cape Nome is a riveting story of betrayal, murder, kidnapping, and government conspiracies, all of which form the backdrop for Percy Hope’s struggle to uncover the truth in a world poisoned by greed, deceit, and lies.

Story
Ex-cop Jim Weir thought he'd seen it all during his years on the force. That is until he saw the body of his sister Annie, brutally used by a monster in human form, then carelessly discarded. He'd never seen such grief ravage the face of his friend and brother-in-law Ray Cruz, a good cop on the Newport Beach Police Department. When Weir learns that the only witness swore the killer made his escape in a Newport Beach squad car, his disbelief turns to confusion and outrage.

Great Historical Fiction, Well Read
I did not read the first Percy Hope book. Though there are references to it, and I'm certainly going to get it because these have piqued my interest greatly, this book can be read or listened to without it. Gordon sets the stage wonderfully for what a thriving, yet miserable place Nome was during the gold rush. With the inclusion of the Three Lucky Swedes, Wyatt Earp, and the discovery of gold on the beach, we get to see what life was like for people from all walks of life through the eyes of Percy Hope and Magnus Vega.
The chapters alternate between Hope and Vega narrating, which I found to be an interesting set up and it became quite enjoyable to know what each of them knew that the other might not based on their places in society. The characters are well fleshed out and the additions to the actual history seem to flow in so well that I had to check my references a few times to see what was real and what was not. The overall feel of the setting stuck with me throughout. Great bars and inns with abject poverty lining the alleys and the stench of so many people crowding into such a small place, full of dreams and desperation. The pacing was beautiful, it kept me going for just one more chapter each time.
Tim Tidball did a great job in his narrations. He really got a feel for the various characters. There are miniscule changes between Magnus and Percy depending upon if they are the one narrating the chapter, or if they are speaking in a chapter narrated by the other. Percy becomes a bit more naive from Magnus' POV, whilst Magnus is still gruff, but Percy always finds a reassurance from him. Each character has a very solidly established voice and Tidball is quite talented with his use of emotions and various nuances of speech.
Overall, I really enjoyed this, both the book and the performance. I recommend it to anyone interested in the Alaskan gold rush or just this time in history with a taste for adventure.
