About this listen

An epic new trilogy begins - a tie-in for the milestone 50th anniversary ofStar Trek: The Original Series - that stretches from the earliest voyages of the starship Enterprise to Captain Kirk's historic five-year mission and from one universe to another!

Hidden aboard the USS Enterprise is a secret that has been passed from captain to captain, from Robert April to Christopher Pike to James T. Kirk. Now the return of the enigmatic woman once known as Number One has brought that secret to light, and Kirk and his crew must risk everything to finish a mission that began with April so many years ago.

Nearly two decades earlier, April and his crew first visited the planet Usilde, where they found both tragedy and a thorny moral dilemma. Today the legacy of that fateful occasion will compel Kirk to embark on a risky voyage back to that forbidden world - which is now deep in territory claimed by the Klingon Empire!

A Fantastic 50th Anniversary Instalment

I would highly recommend this book to any Star Trek fan. The author, Greg Cox, appears to be steeped in the lore of the series. He is able to handily integrate it throughout the narrative while not becoming bogged down in it.

The characters representations and thought process were well flushed out and consistent throughout the story. Greg Cox seems to not only understand the world of Star Trek, but also has an understanding for the way that a Starfleet officer would think through a situation. I particularly enjoyed, listening to the internal monologues. Well I will admit that the story itself was somewhat derivative, it was still thoroughly enjoyable and I was easily sucked into another awesome adventure.

The narrator did a good job as well. Well he appeared to struggle with the characters at the beginning (Mostly the original cast). Midway through the book, he appeared to find his stride and the overall voices of the characters.

Great addition to my Star Trek library

If you're a fan of the extended Star Trek universe, you will enjoy this book. Petkoff's narration was enjoyable as was the story. A great introduction for this series. Looking forward to completing it.

Easy, entertaining, and interesting read.

The book was a good read, easy on the head, entertaining in its level of complexity, and interesting and it's storyline and twists. Story dovetailed really nicely with previous books and p fit well within the Star Trek world. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the original series, knows the history, enjoys and easy and entertaining read. I enjoyed the book, the narrator, and look forward to the next in the series. I'm sure it will be equally good.

I really wanted to like this story

I will buy anything Star Trek fiction. I was elated when audible put out this unabridged offering. I've read almost every star trek book ever written and am now working on buying them again but the audio versions. This one was just not working for me. Robert Petkoff couldn't even save it! This is book 1 of a 3 part series. Majel's character Una or #1 from the Cage episode TOS, comes to Kirk's enterprise with a hidden agenda, ends up getting Kirk & Spock in on the adventure. Now in fairness to Greg Cox, he was given book one to set the stage and writing for Star Trek is a job no author would envy as you're given strict criteria with which to work. He does set up a promising premise for the other 2 books, it just lacks the usual can't put it down feel. Still worth the time & money, just not my favorite

Great narrator, ok story

I loved the narration by Robert Petkoff. He was great with all the different voices. The story was just ok. I was not a fan of Una, but, toward the end, she grew on me. My favorite scenes had the original cast in it. I especially liked the interaction between Kirk, Spock, and Bones. I'm interested enough to pursue the rest of the trilogy.

Makes me reluctant to get the rest of the trilogy

For starters, Robert Petkoff did an admirable job of capturing most of the nuances of the TOS characters. His narration was consistent and carried me through the problems I had with the writing. The aliens via universal translator were interesting to me. His handling of Number One was OK Still, kudos.

For an officer with as many accolades as Una has had heaped upon her, she sure makes a lot of irrational choices in the name of advancing the plot. I would have liked there to have been a reason for her mission, such as a communication of some sort that came to her, rather than just just an eighteen year old guilt.

In for a penny, in for a pound.
Better late than never.
And every other Ben Franklin or Shakespeare saying-turned-cliche. It got old quickly.

Overall, it’s value lies in the peek into the April period. I would love to see more stories from that time.
