An epic new trilogy begins - a tie-in for the milestone 50th anniversary ofStar Trek: The Original Series - that stretches from the earliest voyages of the starship Enterprise to Captain Kirk's historic five-year mission and from one universe to another!
Hidden aboard the USS Enterprise is a secret that has been passed from captain to captain, from Robert April to Christopher Pike to James T. Kirk. Now the return of the enigmatic woman once known as Number One has brought that secret to light, and Kirk and his crew must risk everything to finish a mission that began with April so many years ago.
Nearly two decades earlier, April and his crew first visited the planet Usilde, where they found both tragedy and a thorny moral dilemma. Today the legacy of that fateful occasion will compel Kirk to embark on a risky voyage back to that forbidden world - which is now deep in territory claimed by the Klingon Empire!

Truth be told, I was a little disappointed that it didn't have the sound effects and music from past Simon and Schuster productions. I scoffed at it because I guess I was a spoiled by past audio books. However, a good story will always finds a way to grab your interest.
This tale is about Kirk and crew encountering a past mission that involved one of the Enterprise's past 1st Officer Number One. The author Greg Cox does a good job in weaving a tale that has a lot of call backs to the original series so that this feels like it happened in the original continuity. Often author's will go off the rails, and present something that feels unfamiliar to the franchise. That is not a problem here. If you read Cox's past novels on Khan, then you'll be familiar with some of that same connecting he does here.
Robert Petkoff is really good in presenting the voices to the story. One of my biggest hang ups when a male performer is reading a story involves how he reads female characters. Some try to raise the pitch of their voice. Petkoff does different things to capture women characters. For some he tries to find the pattern of how they speak. You can hear this when he performs the voice of Uhura and Number One. It doesn't take you out of the story.
I'm going to pick up the next two stories. I just hope David Mack's installment of this trilogy is just as good as this one.
Number One in more ways than one!

Is there anything you would change about this book?
Almost no time was spent on the current crew of the enterprise--why?How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
Put Kirk, Spock and McCoy as the central characters. What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
I didn't care much for the female voice.Could you see Captain to Captain being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
no wayAny additional comments?
