About this listen

Case One: A little girl goes missing in the night.

Case Two: A beautiful young office worker falls victim to a maniac's apparently random attack.

Case Three: A new mother finds herself trapped in a hell of her own making - with a very needy baby and a very demanding husband - until a fit of rage creates a grisly, bloody escape.

Thirty years after the first incident, as private detective Jackson Brodie begins investigating all three cases, startling connections and discoveries emerge.

Suited me perfectly

A who-dunnit, similar in very British and acerbic wit to Amanda Craig. Very funny and great characters. Am going to try and find more by this author. Just returned to listen to this one again. It isn't perfect. The various story strands don't fully relate to and illuminate each other but feel more like distractions or other stories Atkinson might have written but were not 'full' enough for a single novel. But even having said that, this is still one of my favorite books of recent years. A winner. I completely forgot to add - Susan Jameson is simply perfect reading this book. Just delightful and with just enough nuance to always be clear without being a caricature. And she totally gets Atkinson's northern Brit humor and knows how to place it - I giggled and barked my way through the listen.

Great Narrator, interesting story

Probably the best narrator of all my audible books. She really helped create the characters and was probably the reason why I enjoyed this book so much.

Great Twists and Fun Read

I've become a great fan of Atkinson. She's an excellent story-teller, developing engaging characters and plot lines that surprise.

Sarcastic, dark, disappointing

Picked up Kate Atkinson bc recommended for Louise Penny fans. She’s clever like Penny, and introduces cultural tidbits at every turn but I didn’t enjoy the Grimm stories and tragic outcomes, and no room to fall in love with any of her characters, if almost enchanted with one- they are sure to meet a brutal, unresolvable fatal end. Not LP, no Inspector G, regrettably only one Ruth after another on the worst days.

Keeper

This one I chose almost on a whim, and it took me completely by surprise. Oddly funny; darkly so. Very human and real. You'll want to pay very close attention to details given seemingly randomly. You'll need them later. Beware that it does seem to start sluggishly; I wondered early on if I had made one of those occaisional mistakes voracious audiobook consumers dread. But if you are at all a fan of Brit mystery and drama, settle in as you'll get what you came for and more. I'll be tearing through the balance of the series as soon as time permits

Good read for sticky summer afternoons!

This was a thoroughly enjoyable novel with sympathetic and relatable characters, plausible tragedies, and a well expressed "everydayness" of tone. The narrator is my current favorite, crisp delivery with wonderfully nuanced delivery of prose and dialogue.

Not Shrines of Gaiety

My first novel by the award-winning Kate Atkinson was Shrines of Gaiety, set after WW1, which I really enjoyed. I thought I'd try her popular Detective Brodie series but I was surprised by its much grittier style. I don't enjoy fiction with themes of childhood sexual abuse or fat-phobia, and prefer less explicit sex scenes. She's a great and empathetic storyteller but I will hesitate before reading another of her books as I prefer more escapism in my fiction.

Engaging story, superb narrator.

Kate Atkinson is a skilled writer. She weaves together several apparently disparate, character-driven plot lines and emerges with a wonderful tale.
