About this listen

From Graham Norton, the BAFTA-award-winning Irish television host and author of the "sparkling and impish" (Daily Mail) memoirs The Life and Loves of a He Devil and So Me, comes a charming debut novel set in an idyllic Irish village where a bumbling investigator has to sort through decades of gossip and secrets to solve a mysterious crime.

The remote Irish village of Duneen has known little drama, but when human remains are discovered on an old farm, suspected to be those of Tommy Burke - a former lover of two different inhabitants - the village's dark past begins to unravel. As the frustrated sergeant PJ Collins struggles to solve a genuine case for the first time in his life, he unearths a community's worth of anger and resentments, secrets and regret.

In this darkly comic, touching and, at times, heartbreaking novel, perfect for fans of J.K. Rowling's The Casual Vacancy, Graham Norton employs his acerbic wit to breathe life into a host of loveable characters and explore - with searing honesty - the complexities and contradictions that make us human.

Most appealing detective in a long time

The key to the mystery is pretty obvious with big hints dropped early, but it's the characters and their motives that make this book such a pleasure. A very refreshing read, hopefully the start of a series.

A bit piecey, but enjoyable

This read didn't capture my attention until about 3/4 of the way through, partially because it didn't seem to flow very smoothly (to me, at least). That's not to say the first 75% wasn't enjoyable enough, because it was, but it didn't particularly engross me like I had expected. I would still definitely recommend it- not the most mysterious, but some surprises along the way, a romance element for sure, and an enjoyable listen.

Brilliant

Graham Norton is an even more brilliant author and narrator than he is talk show host. The layers of this story were so rich and real, it was truly a pleasure to listen to.

Didn't enjoy

I was disappointed in this book. It took forever for the story line to develop and it was kind of confusing to follow. Very Disappointed!

great book

I really, really enjoyed this book! I got it because I love the Graham Norton show and think he's hilarious, but I was genuinely surprised how good of a mystery this book was. I found myself really enjoying the way he was describing the characters and all their little quirks, and the mystery itself was pretty good. Definitely recommend!

Great story, beautifully read.

This was a great story. The intricacies of life in a small town. Sweet, mysterious, cruel and companionate and so beautifully read by Graham.
