About this listen

IN THE RED-HOT FINALE TO PETER MAY'S CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED ENZO FILES, ENZO MACLEOD WILL FACE HIS MOST CHALLENGING COLD CASE YET.

"ENDS MACLEOD'S QUEST WITH A FLOURISH." (MARILYN STASIO, THE NEW YORK TIMES)

"A SATISFYING SURPRISE." (PUBLISHERS WEEKLY (STARRED REVIEW)

"THE LAST SHALL BE BEST." (KIRKUS REVIEWS)

Western France, 1989
A weeping killer deposits the unconscious body of 20-year-old Lucie Martin, her head wrapped in a blue plastic bag, into the waters of a picturesque lake.

Lot-et-Garonne, 2003
Fourteen years later, a summer heat wave parches the countryside, killing trees and bushes and drying out streams. In the scorched mud and desiccated slime of the lake, a fisherman finds a skeleton wearing a bag over its skull.

Paris, October 2011
In an elegant apartment in Paris, forensic expert Enzo Macleod, now 56 years old, pores over the scant evidence of the sixth and final cold case he has been challenged to solve. The most obvious suspect is Régis Blanc, a former pimp already imprisoned for the murders of three sex workers, who may have been Lucie's lover in the months before her disappearance. But Régis has a solid alibi, and Enzo has a feeling the real explanation might be more complicated. In taking on this old and seemingly impossible-to-crack case, Enzo puts everything and everyone he holds dear in terrible danger - and in ways even he never could have imagined.

Critic reviews

"Enzo is an irascible, complex protagonist, with more than his share of personal loss, often masked by bravado. This is the sixth and final book in May's gripping series - and one of the best." (Library Journal)

"The last book in this series, and it ends Macleod's quest with a flourish."(Marilyn Stasio, The New York Times)

"Cast Iron is shot through with the dark legacy of the past." (The Guardian)

I’ve loved everything about Enzo and his extended family throughout this series.
I’m a swimming pool listener, so thankfully, it’s taken a while to go through the Enzo books in South Florida in short exercise sessions. Peter Forbes is a super reader and Peter May has created a world I can happily swim in. Together they have kept me in the pool with aerobics till I’ve built up muscles!
This last Enzo book is super.
We know the people — but if you didn’t before, you’ll get the gist— It’s amazingly complex, but so well written that I didn’t lose track. One plot twist after another.
I’ve heard people call books roller coaster rides— jump on now—this one snaps your neck!
I am happy to see Mr. May has a new Enzo book out, because I kept stopping short of finishing the book, sad I’d lose my chums.
The plots of all the books are tricky, and May’s description of places is a strong suit, but to me, his insight into the motivation and purpose for all his unique characters has only gotten better in this book.
No one dreams up better characters than Peter May!
You are in for a great ride with this series! Thank You!

A roller coaster ride with my man, Enzo!

Peter May is an incredible well written author. You can pap-ably see, hear, feel and taste everything. Then there is Peter Forbes, that can bring life to every word. The combination is wonderful!

Another great Enzo MacCloud story

Overall I have enjoyed the Enzo Files series & this was no exception. Quite a twist at the end but it explained some inexplicable behavior one of the characters began showing in the previous book.

Pretty good

Wonderful characters and presentation. But listening rather than reading (where one can easily turn back and refresh one’s recollection) was a challenge for me.

Well presented, but too complex to listen to rather than read
