About this listen

Leo’s boyhood hero, Henry “Heck” Sundstrom, was larger than life. Lately, however, Heck’s life has been spiraling out of control. First there was the honeymoon boating accident that killed Heck’s son and new daughter-in-law, Allison. And now the big man himself is dying — struck down by a delivery truck in a seedy section of Seattle. As he investigates, Leo begins to wonder if Allison went down with the ship. And whether, with the aid of his aging legmen, “the Boys”, he can prove the “late” Mrs. Heck is more alive — and lethal — than anyone ever suspected.

Loved all the Seattle area references. It would have been perfect if the narrator pronounced a few of the places correctly (Leo would have been embarrassed at Shea-lawn and Ska-git). Loved the use of familiar names of families I know.

Thoroughly enjoyed

There are several LOL moments in this book which Patrick Lawlor makes them even better. The exchange between the University ladies is hilarious "People didn't know if they should shit or go blind" and his description of him getting away from the institute after being drugged had me rolling. Just love the character of Waterman and all his "boys"

One of his funniest!

I wish all authors would write opening chapters that leave the listener anticipating more. That is what G.M. Ford does with Cast in Stone. I am listening to the PI Leo Waterman series in random order. This is the second novel. Waterman is still poor because his dad's will delayed his huge inheritance until his 45th birthday. Cast in stone is a solid suspense mystery/thriller with outstanding narration. This is a fun series.

The opening chapter alone justifies 4 stars!!

I chose this book because I enjoy a good series. However, I read the first book and thought it was a bit wordy but decided to hang in there to see if the writing improved. Unfortunately it hasn't. The plot was interesting and the characters fairly well defined. What bothers me is when Ford used 20 words to describe a tree right in the middle of the action. I found myself thinking get to the point.

Unfulfilled

Fun! But the author occasionally makes it unnecessarily gross. I will buy another of this series.

That was fun!

Would you listen to Cast in Stone again? Why?

Possibly

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Most entertaining imersion reading experience. I stayed with kindle and audible books until done.

What about Patrick Lawlor’s performance did you like?

Super narrator/performer for this series. He captured Leo and his misfit band perfectly.

Another enjoyable escapade

I reviewed the first book in the series and I could almost copy and paste that review here. It has the same basic format and feel. You don't need to read the first one to enjoy this one. These are not 'gritty' or intense PI novels. They will make you snicker. There was no nail biting, no non-stop action, no severe head scratching confusion. What you will get is amusement, mystery and a story line that should hold your interest. Not too simple, not overly complex, not profound. But definitely enjoyable.
The narrator was great. His voice matched my impression of Leo Waterman. His tone worked well with the overall feel of the book.

Enjoyable PI fare
