About this listen

For the first time - in one Audible-exclusive collection - it's 13 stories of Jane Yellowrock, the shape-shifting skinwalker and vampire hunter for hire whose business card reads, "Have Stakes - Will Travel". Jane carries inside her the soul of her Beast, the mountain lion's soul which merged with hers when she accidently performed black magic as a child. Now, she and her Beast stalk the dark streets of New Orleans, bringing rogue vampires true death.

In Cat o' Nine Tales, you'll discover how Jane turned into a big cat for the first time; how she and Molly became friends; how Rick LaFleur got his tattoos. You'll go along on some of Jane's early vamp hunts. You'll even hear two short tales through Bruiser's eyes.

Once you experience these stories set in the fantastic world of this New York Times best-selling series, you'll surely agree with Kim Harrison that Jane Yellowrock is "smart, sexy and ruthless".

The stories included in Cat o' Nine Tales are:

"WeSa and the Lumber King"
"The Early Years"
"Cat Tats"
"Kits"
"Haints"
"Signatures of the Dead"
"First Sight"
"Blood, Fangs and Going Furry"
"Dance Master"
"Cajun With Fangs"
"Golden Delicious"
"Beneath a Bloody Moon"
"Black Water"

Critic reviews

"Khristine Hvam is an outstanding narrator.... Hvam brings warmth and realism to Hunter's unusual characters and adds depth to the ambiance of the New Orleans settings. Her performance is splendid as she carefully creates a multitude of male and female characters, human and otherwise. The entire package flies by quickly, and listeners will want more." ( AudioFile)

Absolutely loved all of the stories. Listened to this after all the Jane YellowRock books.
I still hope that Ricky-Beau's life improves. Can he, Jane and Bruiser form a Triumvirate?

Best Anthology and Narrator!

A collection of short stories which explain assorted backstories. Great narration. Only issue: stories do not give chronological explanation of where they fit in.

The author and storyteller continue to be so fun, gritty, and fierce in this collection of short stories. Good Jane Yellowrock times.

Such a fun group of tales

Would you consider the audio edition of Cat o' Nine Tales to be better than the print version?

I have only purchased the audio version but I cannot imagine not having Kristine Hvam's voice in my head, she is terrific.

What other book might you compare Cat o' Nine Tales to and why?

This series reminds me of the Sookie Stackhouse-True Blood series because of the diverse characters and crazy plot twists, plus both are set in Lousiana and both have vampires.

Which scene was your favorite?

I loved to hear how about Bruiser see's Jane and I also liked to hear about what happened in the mine, since that was how the first book started.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I did find myself laughing out loud at times.

Any additional comments?

At first the "Beast" voice annoyed me and seemed silly. I got used to it quickly and ended up liking it. There are some things that "she" says that do not make sense, she describes some things clearly and some as a "cat' would. For example she might say "the hard black shiny surface that trucks drive on", um ok, you don't know what a ROAD is but you know what a TRUCK is? I just had to overlook those kinds of details.

Great fill in book

Always enjoy this series and this reader is perfect for Jane.
Would like to suggest seeking the proper pronunciation of Newfoundland. It does mar an otherwise perfect performance. I didn't reduce the performance stars because it's the only flaw .

Love Jane Yellowrock

I love short stories, and I love anything in Faith Hunter's world. I was glad to learn more about the characters although placing the stories in the timeframe of the books was a bit of a challenge.
My only complaint for the divine Khristine is that o' is usually pronounced 'uh' I think, since it is a contraction of the word 'of'. and Newfoundland is pronounced 'noo-fund-lund' with the stress on the first syllable. Her drawls are otherwise flawless to this Midwestern ear.

More dimensions in a short format

These short stories give a good background to the main storyline. But also spoiler alert, let’s you in on secrets not explain till you get further in the main series further.

Listen to this after Skinwalker.

Would you listen to Cat o' Nine Tales again? Why?

Great and easy listen. It has just enough excitement but not over the top. Kinda makes you think this could be real down in the deep swamps of Louisiana.

I love Jane and her Beast

Jane Yellowrock fans will enjoy these stories even though most of them sound like they were lifted from the many books I have read. I am a big fan so I enjoyed hearing them again.

The narrator always does an excellent job. She brings life to these stories. Even though these were short stories it did fill my hunger for another Jane Yellowrock book.

I did not enjoy the Molly, earth which, series of stories as much. They seem to run over long. Nevertheless, they were interesting.

I would buy this book again even though it is not on the level of the usual Jane Yellow Rock novel. Despite the shortness of the stories, they were interesting and suspenseful.
