About this listen

Chip Chinery's memoir is a look in front of and behind the curtain at what actually happened his first year as a full-time professional stand-up comedian during the ‘80s comedy boom.

Chip kept a journal and snapped pictures at every gig. Some of the comics were or would become household names. Most would remain unsung. Then there was his 17-year-old opening act who would reach the pinnacle of stand-up fame and fortune.

Before acting in over 200 movies, sitcoms, commercials, and winning a regional Emmy, Chip was a stand-up comic. He did his first open-mic at age 16. Seven years later, Chip quit his nine-to-five and started touring on the stand-up comedy circuit.

This memoir is packed with stories and lessons learned that first year on the road. It's a must for any stand-up comedy fan!

If you love stand up comedy, this book is for you! A look from the inside.

Chip Chinnery has created a great piece of work! His recounting of his early days in stand up comedy is informed by the meticulous note taking he did when he was actually living this story. The audiobook is read by Chip himself, which is a great plus. He tells great and funny stories about life on the road, and he includes some juicy bits about his interactions with some infamous - and notorious - other comics who were working at the same time - like Bill Hicks, and Dave Atell. Very entertaining from beginning to end, with a very notable chapter entitled “Billy Hicks, and Sinbad in Bizarro Nashville” which will leave you howling with laughter! Great book!

Behind the scenes look at a comedian’s life

I used to imagine how frightening it would be to tell jokes to people on a stage but I underestimated by a mile how difficult that life is. This peak behind the scenes allowed me to live that life vicariously. I respect the comedians much more now and I will applaud even more for them.

Have you ever wondered what being a road comedian is like?

Chip Chinery takes the listener on an extremely accurate year journey through the trials and tribulations of becoming a stand-up comedian. Part journal, part travel log, Chip’s stories and observations on that long and winding road are cleaver, funny and engaging. Hearing this in the author’s voice makes it even more entertaining.

A must-read for new performers

I started my acting career about the same time as Chip. Even though we never worked together, his story is so relatable. He tells his journey with a positive, upbeat heart, but doesn't sugarcoat the hard work and financial balancing act it takes to be a professional.

I'm glad he read his own story. It feels genuine.

I wish I had kept a journal like Chip.
