About this listen

Charlie hopes that the new term at Bloor's Academy will hold no nasty surprises. But then Henry Yewbeam appears, twisted through time from the icy winter of 1916.

With the scheming Yewbeam aunts on the prowl, and the Bloors out to catch him, Henry will need Charlie's help just to stay alive. Bloor's Academy can be a very dangerous place!

Critic reviews

"Jenny Nimmo...has a brilliant sense of storytelling and a well-tuned ear for good writing. Shakespearean actor Simon Russell Beale adds wonder to this book with his rich baritone reading." (AudioFile)

Loved It!

I am really enjoying listening to this series, and I would highly recommend it for both children and adults. I tried it out because I was a big Harry Potter fan, and while I agree that the idea was probably taken from the Potter series, the characters are there own and quite enjoyable. I'm looking forward to continuing with this series as Charlie finds out who he is and what talents he possesses. Give it a try. You won't be disappointed!!!

Masterful Storytelling

This second installment was outstanding in quality. Jenny Nimmo did it again, beautifully painting the story in your mind with her artful writing. It was very interesting how she incorporates perspectives other than Charlie's in this book, and she did it very well! I know people always say the 2nd is never as good as the 1st, but that cannot be said for this one. It was just as good, if not better, and I can't get enough! I am so excited to continue the series!

Excellent

Henry gets into so much trouble since he is impulsive. It's all anyone can do to keep saving Henry from all the trouble he gets into. He is a sweet boy but he needs lots of supervision.

Charlie finds his own way

Charlie morphs from passivity to action in response to his peril at school. Surrounded by so much malicious plotting, Charlie shows courage and compassion, and is now supported by a cast of talented companions. Whereas the first book felt dark, the series infuses a bit of joy here and there. And in the darkness, there is comedy - the absurdity of his grandmothers and aunts.

This book has been reissued with another narrator as well. Both narrators, Beale here and Coen in the more recent version, are very listenable in their different styles; but bump up the speed. I like Beale best, but often the first listen locks in our image of a book.

Bounces into now and then, and entertains in the present. Great read! I read it twice

this series is becoming my favorite!!

although i feel like i missed out on these books as a kid, i’m so glad my partner introduced me to them because they’re no less entertaining now. i feel like i’m inside the story with the characters, tagging along on each adventure. her imagery feels like magic as i listen! a great read for any audience, i’d say. the narrator is brilliant as well! he makes each character seem so real and i can’t imagine anyone else doing it.
