About this listen

The true story of Jane Alexander, who spent 13 years tracking down and putting away the man who murdered her 88-year old aunt, and then went on to help solve 20 murders, igniting a national victim's rights movement.

Jane Alexander had it all: a wonderful family, a beautiful home on three acres just north of San Francisco, and a deep romance with Tom O'Donnell. A family friend for 25 years prior to their romance, Tom helped Jane cope with the death of her husband and captivated her with his charming, unflappable personality. But Jane's picturesque life came crashing down the morning that her beloved aunt was savagely murdered. Slowly, astonishingly, the evidence began to point to the last person Jane would ever believe capable of such an act: Tom O'Donnell. She soon discovered that he had fled with thousands of dollars of her money, forcing her to sell her possessions and move into a dilapidated old house. Jane would eventually learn that she was his next victim: he had secretly taken out a million dollar life insurance policy on her. With and unresponsive criminal justice system and almost everyone telling her that her quest was futile, Jane devoted her entire life to tracking him down and forcing the system to do its job and get justice for her beloved aunt.

But the story does not stop there: along the way, Jane met dozens of people with similar horror stories: a savagely murdered loved one, a justice system that refused to function. She and Jan Miller, whose daughter was murdered during summer break at Chico State University in a case still unsolved, founded Citizens Against Homicide to fight back for the victim's families. At the time of Jane Alexander's death in 2008, they had helped solve 20 cold case murders, were working on 500 homicide investigations, and had seen their organization spread to all 50 states, with more than 5,000 members.

Citizen Jane

Great Book and Wonderful Narration!
Citizen Jane, written by James Dalessandro, and narrated by Kevin Pierce, is among the best books I've experienced as a reader/listener. The book flows naturally, making the story easy to follow. I've listened to the audio book 3 times now. Why 3 times? It's that good. Kevin Pierce is the greatest narrator I have ever been privileged to hear, and he masterfully brings this story to life. I hope to see and hear more from this author and narrator together in the near future. As a Law Enforcement professional, I'm impressed with the work was done in this case, and especially the research done by the author. I could go on and on about how impressive this book, the author and the narrator, but I will simply advise you to purchase it and experience the story so wonderfully researched, written and told.

The Ultimate Misogynist

Pretty good telling of the story of a serial user/abuser of women, and the woman who finally brings him down.

Jane's gullibility in handing over her home and control of her finances to this loser is difficult to understand, but there you go; love is blind. Even more frustrating is her refusal to recognize the truth about Tom O'Donnell until long after his outrageous lies and bizarre flight have exposed his murderous treachery.

When she finally comes to her senses and recognizes what O'Donnell is and what he has done, Jane becomes a force to be reckoned with.

Captivating!

I don’t usually read many books from this genre, but I really enjoyed this one. The narration brought the story to life and held my interest throughout. The story was well thought out, complete and will keep you listening. I will be watching for this author in the future.

This book is a rip-off

Would you try another book from James Dalessandro and/or Kevin Pierce?

Kevin Pierce is a pro. But James Dalessandro hoodwinked true crime fans with this title, so no, I'd steer clear of his books.

What could James Dalessandro have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

He could have not left 75% of the story out of the book. Seriously, he covered the entire trial in about 3 paragraphs! I thought my app had skipped over 15 chapters of testimony, but nope! The author just decided to wrap it up in the quickest summary you've ever read. The detailed lead-up to the trial is well done, but then BOOM we are in the epilogue!?! I felt like the author decided to publish his half-finished manuscript. Seasoned true crime readers will be very disappointed with this book which utterly fails to live up to expectations for the genre.

What about Kevin Pierce’s performance did you like?

Kevin Pierce could read recipes or the classifieds and make them sound intriguing. He's amazing.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointing for sure.

Any additional comments?

Buyer beware. Avoid this book.
