The Worst Kind of Crime

Secret Lessons is about a sixth-grade teacher in a Caseyville, Illinois, elementary school, who was accused of sexually abusing numerous young girls, and the ensuing investigation and prosecution.

What the book also brings to light is the shameful behavior of some in the school, the town, the county, and the justice system.

A book about a subject like this could easily turn tawdry and sensationalistic, but the authors of Secret Lessons, Don W. Weber and Charles Bosworth Jr., approached it with insight and compassion, shining a light on areas of our society that all too often remains in the dark.

This audiobook was riveting from start to finish.

I had cold chills several times.

I love the narrator and the book is well written. it is incredulous that children reap the seeds of evil sown by adults.

Great performance tragic story

this is the second book I've listened to by these writers and this narrator. His performance is always amazingly captivating. the stories are great because they are real and while not everything works out perfect it's okay because you know it's real.
side note this story may be hard for those with young daughter or if the listen has been a victim of sexual abuse.

Read the description first

What happened is extremely tragic. The way that the characters and events are sometimes referred to is very melodramatic. "If he had only realized what this call signified;" "If only they hadn't done _____ that day". To me, not being familiar with the events, had me anticipating some of these people to be killed, or the story to become suspenseful at some point. In reality, it's a true courtroom story- not so much a retelling of what occurred as an accounting of events that took place, though that does occur at points, due to the nature of courtroom trials. I think further background information on the girls (What are their home lives like? Did they have friends? Were they bullied? etc.) would have been helpful to readers looking for a story...not a re-reading of newspapers and courtroom transcripts. If you like courtroom stories, definitely go ahead on this one. If not...read the description first.

The narration for this book was excellent- exactly what you would want to up the intensity and add depth.

Heart of Evil

Good telling of an ugly story. We all know people like the misguided lot that came out in vigorous support of this monster, even if we don't understand what motivates them.
Unlike many of the people involved in this case, I found the conclusion of events to be a satisfactory one.
Weber's repetition of key ideas becomes tedious. Still, it's a worthwhile listen.
Kevin Pierce, as always, turns in a strong performance.

Scary, Disgusting...but Typical, I'm Afraid

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. It's the kind of story that needs to be told. The book was well written and the narration was perfect.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Secret Lessons?

The end. I'll leave it at that for those that have not listen to it or do not know the story.

Have you listened to any of Kevin Pierce’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

The same. Which means, excellent!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

My extreme reaction was that this book characterizes the typical issue we always seem to have when a "trusted" figure descends into depravity. A group of people that refuse to admit reality - no matter how many facts are thrown at them.

Any additional comments?

Great book. I highly recommend for a listener of this genre.

I loved this book! These authors delivered for sure.

I got to know the characters. This evoked some strong emotions. The ending wrapped everything up. I’m already looking for other books by these authors. Kevin Pierce is my favorite narrator. Again.

Another Great Listen

Weber and Bosworth once again provide a compelling narrative. The subject matter may prove too much for some as their are somewhat explicit descriptions of sexual activity between an adult and several minors. Pierce is excellent with his authoritative yet gentle personable narration.
