Still reeling from the shock of their first expulsion, the first-years head into the last special exam of the year--a seven-event gauntlet that sees Class A facing off against Class C, and Class B against Class D. With each class's elected commander facing expulsion if they lose, Ayanokouji volunteers for the role to quell his classmates' suspicion about the events of the last exam. And with Sakayanagi captaining Class A, making this the right place and right time for their long-anticipated personal showdown--he might just need that Protection Point before too long.

Overall, the volume would’ve been very good if it were just another entry in the series. However, given the expectation that the main character would finally be trying, it ended up being rather disappointing. This, combined with the finale and the disproportionate focus on Hermione, made it feel unsatisfying from a long-term storytelling perspective. It doesn’t portray the main character in the way that had been hinted at throughout the series, and frankly, it reduces my investment in him as a character. The backstory and buildup developed throughout their earlier meetings now feel less impactful, as the consequences don’t land as heavily. In addition, the direction of the plot seems to suggest that things were building up to something major, but with MC not turning out to be what it was made out to be, the execution ends up feeling lackluster. There were moments that felt unnecessary or unearned. Whether due to plot inconsistencies or issues with the overall direction, it raises concerns about a potential decline in the series' quality moving forward, which has made me really dislike some of the story choices made in this volume. Especially since this is the finale of the first-year arc, and considering the promises that were made, I think the execution was questionable in terms of both payoff and setup for the remainder of the series. That said, it’s not a terrible book. If the expectations for future development didn’t exist, it would’ve been a pretty decent read, except for those issues near the end and the lack of actual effort shown by the main character. Granted, his laziness has been consistent throughout the story, but only in the shallow sense of lacking input or effort. I would’ve liked to see more depth tied to his supposed intense yern for knowledge and his desire to learn, which had been mentioned before about his true self/past but never really elaborated on. Instead, he’s just lazy again, and I think that’s a weakness for the series if it continues in this direction. This volume was a perfect opportunity to take things to the next level, to deepen our understanding of the protagonist internally and to deliver a meaningful payoff. Unfortunately, none of that happened. In fact, it made everything feel more hollow, drawing out the slower parts of the story without giving us the emotional or narrative payoff we expected. It also potentially sets things up for a worse trajectory moving forward. Again, while the writing was all right on a surface level, given the context of the entire series, this volume was definitely a disappointment

Well written, but disappointing for the development of the series and depth of character
