About this listen
Cleopatra, the last queen of Egypt, is both one of the best-known and most misunderstood figures in ancient history. Since her death over 2,000 years ago almost all contemporary evidence of her life has vanished, but she has lived on through the writings of Greek and Roman scholars, which has in turn inspired works of poetry, literature, art, drama, and film through the ages.
According to the popular myth, Cleopatra was a woman of extraordinary beauty. Less flatteringly, she has been demonized as a depraved power-mad seductress who tried and failed to conquer the Roman world by getting its leading generals into bed.
But this image is the work of Roman propaganda, and the real Cleopatra was far more complex and alluring for plenty of reasons other than beauty. A woman of many talents, she was a skilled politician, a shrewd strategist, and an accomplished scholar, as well as being the richest ruler in the Mediterranean and one of the most influential women in ancient history. At the same time, her court was plagued by plotting, intrigue, and murder, and she exhibited the same ruthlessness as her ancestors. Custom obliged her to marry both of her brothers, but she preferred to rule alone and disposed of them before they came of age: waging a brutal civil war against the first and poisoning the second.
Far more successful (and famous) were her romances with two of the most prominent Romans of the day—Julius Caesar and Mark Antony. Both ended in tragedy, but also gave Ancient Egypt its last burst of life.
Although Cleopatra did not even live to see her 40th birthday, she packed a lot in. After coming to the throne at just 17 years of age, she spent more than two decades trying to preserve her kingdom’s independence and rebuild the empire her ancestors had gained and lost. In the end, it backfired, but that does not change the fact that some of the most momentous events in the history of human civilization happened during her reign.
Cleopatra’s defeat and suicide did not merely mark the end of the Ptolemaic dynasty. Her death brought three thousand years of pharaonic tradition crashing down in Egypt, and in its place the age of the Roman emperors was born.

Story
Sixteen hundred years ago Britain left the Roman Empire and swiftly fell into ruin. Grand cities and luxurious villas were deserted and left to crumble, and civil society collapsed into chaos. Into this violent and unstable world came foreign invaders from across the sea, and established themselves as its new masters. The Anglo-Saxons traces the turbulent history of these people across the next six centuries. It explains how their earliest rulers fought relentlessly against each other for glory and supremacy, and then were almost destroyed by the onslaught of the vikings.

The Roman Empire has been in the spotlight for ages. It has been studied, research, and taught in schools across the world. Inventions, words, vocabulary, and philosophy have been derived from those important transition in human history. The Romans were ruthless in some ways yet civilized in others. They were a peculiar people who did things differently than those they called barbarians. Their warfare, their habits, their vision of the future...these all made their empire what it became. What is that makes us so obsessed with this particular time period?

Caesar Augustus's story, one of the most riveting in western history, is filled with drama and contradiction, risky gambles and unexpected success. He began as a teenage warlord, whose only claim to power was as the heir of the murdered Julius Caesar. Mark Antony dubbed him "a boy who owes everything to a name," but in the years to come the youth outmaneuvered all the older and more experienced politicians and was the last man standing in 30 BC.

Story
For more than 1,000 years, Christians and Muslims lived side by side, sometimes at peace and sometimes at war. When Christian armies seized Jerusalem in 1099, they began the most notorious period of conflict between the two religions. Depending on who you ask, the fall of the holy city was either an inspiring legend or the greatest of horrors. In Crusaders, Dan Jones interrogates the many sides of the larger story, charting a deeply human and avowedly pluralist path through the crusading era.

Story
When Alexander the Great died at the age of 32, his empire stretched from the Adriatic Sea in the west all the way to modern-day India in the east. In an unusual compromise, his two heirs - a mentally damaged half brother, Philip III, and an infant son, Alexander IV, born after his death - were jointly granted the kingship. But six of Alexander's Macedonian generals, spurred by their own thirst for power and the legend that Alexander bequeathed his rule "to the strongest," fought to gain supremacy.

Warrior. Ruler. Patron of the arts and language. Terrorist. Brutal oppressor. Protector of the good. Guardian of Christendom. Father of Europe. There are so many different ways in which Charlemagne can be described, and yet, the man himself is often seen as an enigma. Depending on the viewpoint of history, he could have been either a monster or a guardian angel. Yet, as with most men, the truth lies somewhere in between. The truth is that he was human.

The Borgia family have become a byword for evil. Corruption, incest, ruthless megalomania, avarice, and vicious cruelty - all have been associated with their name. And yet, paradoxically, this family lived when the Renaissance was coming into its full flowering in Italy. Examples of infamy flourished alongside some of the finest art produced in western history.

The life of Augustus is historically important because his leadership marked out a new era in the story of the Roman world - an era that would see the expansion of the Roman Empire across the Mediterranean and beyond. However, the influence of the Roman Empire extended much farther than its territory and had a profound effect on the development of Western culture.

Story
The Roman emperor Nero’s name has long been a byword for cruelty, decadence, and despotism. As the stories go, he set fire to Rome and thrummed his lyre as it burned. He then cleared the charred ruins and built a vast palace. He committed incest with his mother, who had schemed and killed to place him on the throne, and later murdered her. But these stories, left behind by contemporary historians who hated him, are hardly the full picture, and in this nuanced biography, celebrated historian Anthony Everitt and investigative journalist Roddy Ashworth reveal the contradictions inherent in Nero

Experience a bold take on this classic autobiography as it’s performed by Oscar-nominated Laurence Fishburne. In this searing classic autobiography, originally published in 1965, Malcolm X, the Muslim leader, firebrand, and Black empowerment activist, tells the extraordinary story of his life and the growth of the Human Rights movement. His fascinating perspective on the lies and limitations of the American dream and the inherent racism in a society that denies its non-White citizens the opportunity to dream, gives extraordinary insight into the most urgent issues of our own time.
