About this listen

In marriage-minded Regency England, one simple word can ruin your life. Compromise! Can bring down a virtuous maiden, like Miss Elizabeth Bennet, and her entire family along with her.

When Elizabeth finds Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy outside Netherfield, alone and at his most vulnerable, she must make a quick decision to bend the rules of propriety to help him or turn her back on someone in need. Her tender heart reaches out to him and his wounded one grabs hold of her well-intentioned support. Discovery changes the course of their lives as Elizabeth is forced to accept a reluctant proposal of marriage from this man whom she has just barely begun to respect. Can Jane Austen's most beloved couple reach a compromise that might turn a tenuous friendship into a loving marriage? Will it survive as desperate, unscrupulous, and foolish people alike set compromising machinations into motion for their own greedy ends?

Follow Elizabeth and Darcy in this novel-length Regency romance as J. Dawn King takes them through a sweet variation of Pride and Prejudice where compromises abound and outcomes will surprise you.

I will never compromise on my love for Steve Zimmerman

I think I may have a problem. Although I have made my peace with it. Loved loved the premise and how it was executed. I never get tired with these compromised tropes and this author did a very well job of giving us a story with this trip without sounding boring or repeated. Stevie Zimmerman’s Mr. Darcy is once again the love of my life. Please go read her whole catalog if you haven’t already. Definitely liked this author and will keep an eye out for more of her stuff with Stevie Zimmerman or on Kindle

As placid as a becalmed breeze

The author has the rhythms of Austen’s writing down. The problem (for me) was that there was little of Austen’s acerbic wit in evidence. The story plodded placidly along with little tension even if the plot was moving toward some. I assumed trouble would eventually showed up, but I got tired of waiting for it and moved on to a more bracing read.

This may be my failing and not the author’s. There is so much bad writing out there — credit must be given to the author’s competent prose. I may pick the book up again when I am in an easier mood.

Good guys win - bad guys lose

Fresh and creative Pride and Prejudice variation expertly narrated by Stevie Zimmerman. Lots of cliff hanger moments, fun and funny stuff, romantic intrigue with Caroline Bingley getting her comeuppance. She's (Caroline) my fav "Snidely Whiplash" character in the many P&P variations I've read. Pearl Hewitt (my fav narrator) does the best Caroline voice in all the audibles ... Stevie Zimmerman makes a creditable voice characterization. Enjoy!

Sweet and Simple

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Yes, something to play in the background with not much really focus on.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

I love to hear variations from different authors on how the classic Pride and Prejudice really happened, so King's editions was simple and clean. For listeners whom prefer a more innocent story, this was defiantly a plus. However, though I understand the title is called "Compromise," the characters were constantly crying the word and demanding retribution in too little too obviously planned ways. Halfway through the book, it was just grating and annoying.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

Zimmerman did a well enough job, her voice is calm and fits well with the narrative. At times the audio sounds like it is a tad muffled, but nothing too distracting.

Could you see Compromised! being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

It could be cute, quirky short film.

Elizabeth truly stands out in this one

From the beginning when Elizabeth listens and tries to comfort and advise Darcy to the laughing way she puts Lord Matlock and Lady Catherine de Bourgh their place during the confrontation at the inn her personality and integrity shines in this variation. Those two and Carolyn Bingley are more vile and conniving in this story than the original. Anne de Bourgh and Jane both have more backbone. Even though it’s only 5-1/2 hours long it felt like a bigger story. The plot is different and fast paced the characters personalities are vibrant. This was a fun story. There were several places I added a bookmark just so I could listen to that section again. I rarely do that.
Stevie Zimmerman was excellent. She captured Elizabeth’s vibrant personality perfectly. I listened to this @ 1.25x speed.

Good story

Really nice story of our two favorites falling in love while everyone else creates difficulties. Not a ton of angst but not boring either.
