About this listen

Confessions of a Prairie Bitch is Alison Arngrim's comic memoir of growing up as one of television's most memorable characters - the devious Nellie Oleson on the hit television show Little House on the Prairie.

With behind-the-scenes stories from the set, as well as tales from her bohemian upbringing in West Hollywood and her headline-making advocacy work on behalf of HIV awareness and abused children, Confessions of a Prairie Bitch is a must for fans of everything Little House: the classic television series and its many stars like Michael Landon and Melissa Gilbert; Gilbert's best-selling memoir Prairie Tale; and, of course, the beloved series of books by Laura Ingalls Wilder that started it all.

Best Audiobook of the Year

What did you love best about Confessions of a Prairie Bitch?

The book would have been good regardless but Alison Arngrim did such an amazing job reading her own book. Her bits of humor, voices, and emotion just took what would have been a great book and made it even greater. I had no idea she was so funny and the insights she offered not just on LHOTP but just on the world in general was just terrific. I cannot wait to listen to this book again.

Great story, bitch!

What a great story! I grew up on Little House and it was nice hearing about the real Alison. Thanks for sharing the good and the bad.

Written and Performed by Alison Herself

Alison has a story to tell, and does it in her own entertaining style. We have a window into her life as a child, and into the backstage of our well-loved television series.

Inspiring!

Could not stop listening to this book! Alison Arngrim is an amazing woman who went from being a victim of abuse to child star, to activist for HIV/AIDS and The Protect organization. Listening to this was like catching up with a friend over coffee. Highly recommend!

Brilliant from start to finish

I grew up watching LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE, identifying with Melissa Gilbert as Laura Ingalls and despising the awful Nellie Olsen. The actress Alison Arngrim is as delightful as Nellie was horrible. Her subtly sarcastic writing and pitch perfect narration made CONFESSIONS OF A PRAIRIE BITCH one of the most fun books I’ve ever listened to on audio.

Arngrim gets the jokes, never taking herself too seriously. She recounts painful child abuse in a manner that doesn’t evoke pity, but rather shows her quiet strength and ability to survive. At times she gossips about who was actually the bitch on the set (spoiler alert: Melissa Sue Anderson/Mary who has become a terrific person now), who developed drinking problems (Melissa Gilbert and Michael Landon /Laura and Pa), who was a diva (Katherine MacGregor/Mrs Olsen). Nearly everything she divulges was already public knowledge, though not it one place.

I didn’t want the book to end. I want Arngrim to write and narrate more books. I would have loved to be her friend as kid. I think I’ll re-listen to this audiobook again.

Fun to listen to!

Alison does a great job with the narration. The girls got great diction! I would have preferred less rapid fire jokes, but overall I enjoyed it. She’s done good things with her celebrity!

Amazing!

Loved that Alison did her own narration. I mean, I knew Nellie inside out, so this should be an interesting book, straight from her mouth, right? WOW! So much I didn’t expect to hear. Interesting, funny, and heartbreaking. Can honestly say this is one I might listen to again.
