About this listen

The long way home

Hammer's Slammer Don Slade is coming home to the planet Tethys, to his son and the woman he loves. But the space between is dark and cold. And the stars he must pass shine their light on planets which beckon to the weary traveler, planets which hold hidden dangers. And if Don Slade should ever reach Tethys... that is when the real fighting starts.

At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management). Vietnam veteran, former lawyer, former bus driver, and now best-selling author, David Drake tells a military story like no other. His readers recognize that he can take them where no one else can, with gut-wrenching description that puts them face-to-face with the enemy, and in the midst of the action right on the battlefield. He helped create the audience for mercenary military science fiction with his best-selling Hammer's Slammers books. Drake graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Iowa, majoring in history (with honors) and Latin. His stint at Duke University Law School was interrupted for two years by the U.S. Army, where he served as an enlisted interrogator with the 11th Armored Cavalry in Vietnam and Cambodia. Drake has a wife, a son, and various pets.

Critic reviews

"[Drake] has developed a following for his Slammers just short of cult proportions." (Rave Reviews)

Great performance by the narrator

This book was a four out of five stars for me; enjoyable but not necessarily my favorite of the Hammer's Slammers series. However, the narrator did a fantastic job and really made the story come alive.

Slammers what more do you have to say.

yet another great addition to the Hammer Slammer series. I'm reminded that at the first book I read when I was a child and that's been a while. still the series brings me back to that childhood and the reason why I love Hammer's Slammers.

Going home.

Great interpretation of Homer’s Odyssey! The author has captured the themes of going home and guest-friendship very well.

The Odyssey

A retelling and reframing of Home's epic poem. More accessible prose version of the poetic original.

The Odyssey by David Drake..!

The further I got into "Cross The Stars", I had a growing feeling that the overall Flow and Ebb of the Tale felt Familiar... Then toward the last few chapters it crystallized in clarity. This is "The Odyssey" brought to a distant future and retold. Don Slade is Odysseus striving to come home after Years of Campaigning and Weird Travels...

Weakest of the Series

This short-story collection is essentially an SF version of The Odyssey. The individual stories are only fair, with the exception of the final one, which is the return of the protagonist to his childhood home. The latter is quite good.

Decent examination of the character of Don Slade and a pretty good expansion to the world of Hammer's Slammers.
