Former spy Maggie Bird came to the seaside village of Purity, Maine, eager to put the past behind her after a mission went tragically wrong. These days, she’s living quietly on her chicken farm, still wary of blowback from the events that forced her early retirement. But when a body turns up in Maggie’s driveway, she knows it’s a message from former foes who haven’t forgotten her. Maggie turns to her local circle of old friends—all retirees from the CIA—to help uncover the truth about who is trying to kill her, and why.

Detective Inspector Avison Fluke is a man on the edge. He has committed a crime to get back to work, concealed a debilitating illness and is about to be made homeless. Just as he thinks things can't get any worse, the body of a young woman is found buried on a Cumbrian building site. Shot once in the back of the head, it is a cold, calculated execution. When the postmortem reveals she has gone to significant expense in disguising her appearance, Fluke knows this is no ordinary murder.

Two years ago, a hostile Prime Minister launched the Monochrome inquiry, investigating "historical over-reaching" by the British Secret Service “to investigate historical over-reaching.” Monochrome’s mission was to ferret out any hint of misconduct by any MI5 officer—and allowed Griselda Fleet and Malcolm Kyle, the two civil servants seconded to the project, unfettered access to any and all confidential information in the Service archives in order to do so. But MI5’s formidable First Desk did not become Britain’s top spy by accident, and she has successfully thwarted the inquiry at every turn.

Story
Northern Ireland, spring 1981. Hunger strikes, riots, power cuts, a homophobic serial killer with a penchant for opera, and a young woman’s suicide that may yet turn out to be murder: on the surface, the events are unconnected, but then things—and people—aren’t always what they seem. Detective Sergeant Duffy is the man tasked with trying to get to the bottom of it all. It’s no easy job—especially when it turns out that one of the victims was involved in the IRA but was last seen discussing business with someone from the loyalist Ulster Volunteer Force.

Publisher's summary
A collection of seven short stories, recorded here for the first time.
In The Killing Field, Poe and Tilly are having breakfast, wondering how to spend the rest of their holiday, when their presence is requested at a Cumbrian airfield. An airfield that, during the 2001 foot-and-mouth crisis, was known as the killing field...
In Why Don't Sheep Shrink?, a global pandemic forces Poe and Tilly to self-isolate together. Things don't go well. They're bickering and on the verge of falling out until Poe finds an old case file: a locked-room mystery he's been mulling over for years. Step forward, Tilly Bradshaw.
Dead Man's Fingers sees Poe, Tilly and Edgar, Poe's English springer spaniel, enjoying a picnic at a nature reserve. When Edgar chases a rabbit, and Poe and Tilly chase after Edgar, they stumble upon a twenty-year-old mystery, a mystery that couldn't be solved until now . . .
In Strange Ink crime-fighting duo Tilly and Poe solve a mystery from inside a pantomime horse in a short story that first appeared in the Halloween anthology Afraid of the Shadows
In A Permanent Solution Poe and Tilly are on an HR course in Wales when a murder is committed in their hotel. But, maybe not everything is as it seems. This story first appeared in First Edition: Celebrating 21 Years of Goldsboro Books.
Mondo Bizzarro sees Tilly drag Poe to Durham to meet her favourite fantasy author, Aldridge Fowler, but when they arrive, he's already dead - killed by his own hand. Despite the overwhelming evidence though, Poe suspects the bookshop staff might be hiding a terrible secret.
In Once in a Red Moon, whilst on a murder-mystery evening in deepest darkest Northumberland, Poe manages to annoy everyone whilst simultaneously solving a mystery - what happened to a five-carat red diamond called the Red Moon of Coonowrin.

Story
It was 1970 in a defeated Rhode Island fishing town. Vietnam and Nixon dominated the national news. Both the near and distant future looked bleak. But they were five inseparable high school friends with something incredible in common: an unwavering resolve to look after each other no matter what hell life threw at them. And they were on a mission. The plan was simple: Go off the grid before they turned 18 to avoid the draft. They’d sell some grass, stack some cash, then head west and start a commune. What could possibly go wrong?

These Stories are Brilliant
M.W. Craven is one of my favorite authors and he doesn't disappoint with these brilliant short stories. Washington Poe and Tilly Bradshaw are a great duo. I wonder if Poe will every win an argument with Tilly. Probably not. John Banks is a wonderful narrator. A great listen.

Definitely worth the price or credit!
What a pleasant and fantastic surprise!
This is an anthology - or I guess a better description is that it is a collection of short stories from the world of Washington Poe and Tilly Bradshaw. I think there are two or three brand new ones and the others have supposedly been out previously.
For me, I hadn't read any of them, so it was a complete and total pleasure. I had just noticed that the audio versions of each of these novellas were now available and was about to purchase each separately (there are 7 separate stories!) when I happened to notice THIS book also being newly dropped and that it contained EVERY one of them.....SCORE!!!
The cases are extremely short, yet nothing feels skimped or superficial. The setting even makes sense as for most of the stories/cases, Poe and Tilly are forced to quarantine as the Covid 19 Pandemic and lockdown is just starting.
I'm not going to go into the stories separately but will say that they were interesting, unique and exactly what we have come to expect from this fantastic duo.
Great, great choice for a quick and fun read/listen and DEFINITELY worth the price.
