“A tour-de-force! The pace is relentless, the plot smart, his new lead character, Nick Ryan, is a hero for the times…Reed is a brilliant storyteller.”—Louise Penny, #1 New York Times bestselling author

When you’re in trouble, you call 911.

When cops are in trouble, they call Nick Ryan.

Every cop in the city knows his name, but no one says it out loud. In fact, they don’t talk about him at all.

He doesn’t wear a uniform, but he is the most powerful cop in New York.

Nick Ryan can find a criminal who’s vanished. Or he can make a key witness disappear.

He has cars, safe houses, money, and weapons hidden all over the city.

He’s the mayor’s private cop, the fixer, the first call when the men and women who protect and serve are in trouble and need protection themselves.

With conflicted loyalties and a divided soul, he’s a veteran cop still fighting his own private war. He’s a soldier of the streets with his own personal code.

But what happens when the man who knows all the city’s secrets becomes a threat to both sides of the law?

This book is a compelling story. The narrator is a pleasure to listen to, which is not always the case. Highly recommended.

Excellent story and terrific narration!

From the prologue on I was hooked. Great story from beginning to end. Deep, twisting, suspenseful. Just wonderful. Can't wait for the sequel!

But as for heroes? It is said we are all heroes of our own story. I don’t know if that’s true, but to me heroes are all around us. They save lives while risking their own. They make sacrifices so the coming generations can have something better. They never ask for praise or rewards, they just work hard, love hard, and keep believing.

Nick Ryan is no different. His situations and choices are his own unique story. I don’t think we need to decipher his hero status, a question posed by the author in the end notes. I really enjoyed the story. The complexity of choices and how we make them, the moral codes we use, and the raw humanity behind all of this messy life. Enjoy! 😊

I liked everything. Search for my often used "Prayer Review". Welcome to the club RFC. Peter Giles is a great choice for reader.

It seemed like there was too much story for the length of the book- it was squeezed together like an accordion. The premise is good (who doesn’t like Batman) the characters make a nice ensemble. I’m looking forward to the rest of the series.

Set up w/a nice cast of characters.

The premise is interesting and Detective Nick Ryan is a protagonist that straddles both sides of morality.

Great Premise

So far I’m impressed with Nick Ryan’s character
I am impressed for the most part. I will say there is a lot of race blaming. Not sure if that bothers me

If you like tired cliches, one after another, then this book is for you. If you hate character development, you'll love this one. Don't like to be surprised, no worries with this book, you won't be. I really wanted to like this but I just couldn't. The narrator's gravelly voice was distracting, and the lack of literary creativity brought me to the point where I decided that I couldn't waste any more time hoping it was suddenly going to get good. Sadly I purchased this book with money rather than an Audible credit so I am stuck with this dud. Save your money and your time and find something else.

Every possible cliche....

Total formula book for people who think NCIS Omaha is good! So many cliches that I was waiting for the escaped Nazi to try to take over the world. No more chapters please! Terrible book soon to be made into a terrible movie (I bet).
