About this listen

Betrayed by those she trusted, penniless and alone, Darcie Finch is forced to accept a position no one else dares as assistant to dangerously attractive Dr. Damien Cole. Ignoring the whispered warnings and rumors he's a man to fear, she takes her position at his eerie estate, where she quickly discovers nothing is at it seems, least of all her handsome and brooding employer. As Darcie struggles with her fierce attraction to Damien, she must also deal with the blood, the disappearances...and the murders.

With her options dwindling and time running out, Darcie must rely on her instincts as she confronts the man with whom she is falling in love. Is he an innocent and misunderstood man...or a remorseless killer who prowls the East End streets?

This is an amazing read. I couldn't help but get lost in the story. I can't wait to start the next book.

Fun Gothic; Great Narration

Wonderfully gothic.

Darcie is a young gentlewoman down on her luck. She obtains a maid-of-all-work position in the household of Dr Damien Cole and eventually becomes an illustrator for his anatomical studies. The novel is set in Victorian London during the time of Jack the Ripper and there are similar murders in Whitechapel.

The author does a good job of setting up Darcie so she doesn't know whether the doctor is evil, or whether she should listen to her heart which is telling her to fall in love with him. Classic gothic struggle!

The attraction between Darcie and Damien was a little weak, and the middle of the book dragged, but overall it was a fun plunge into the gothic world of Victorian London. And the narrator was fantastic.

Loved it.

Dark Desires Book 1 by Eve Silver. This is the first time I have read a Gothic Romance Novel. I have to say that I loved it. This story was amazing. I instantly fell in love with the dark mysterious Dr. Damien Cole. His character is what drew me in and the narrator very well selected. My heart went out to these two who suffered life in two different ways yet made its way to happiness. This author is new to me but I will have a second glance. I purchased Book 2. This is a must read.

Suspenseful steamy romance

This book was well written and the characters were well developed. It had a lot of suspense and steam and I thoroughly enjoyed it. narration (I felt) was excellent.

This story kept me on the edge of my seat

I loved the story setting being in old London, England. The whole book was breathtaking. I loved the narrator also.

3.75 Stars

The story isn’t too bad! I’m going to venture on the next in the series, because if the author improves on the first then it should be a solid 4 stars.
As for the narrator, I have no problem with Billie Fulford-Brown’s narrating abilities and have enjoyed other performances by her. But the choices she made for the sisters’ accents seem less than ideal. They were raised in a prosperous middle class or upper middle class household and educated as ladies. Both girls, but especially Abigail, who would’ve been older when they lost their money and currently associates with some posh clients have lower class accents. It’s possible the narrator wasn’t able to read the script in advance, and if that’s the case the choice makes sense. But because of the accents the narrator chose for the girls, the gap between the lovers seems wider than it really is.
Just my opinion though, obviously.

A Lil Jack the Ripper Romance

This was as good as any period drama romance featuring an eccentric doctor and a hapless waif who came before them (har har). But seriously, the mystery is pretty fun, and it was engaging enough to keep me from rolling my eyes at the predictable tropes that threatened to stampede to their clichéd ends.

At turns, I suspected just about every character of being the ripper, and even wondered if a vampire slipped into the narrative somewhere. This indeterminate time period is plagued with a kind of Downton Abby master-worship, but Americans love to keep that dream alive (servants just looooooove being servants, you know).

Don’t worry; the proper main characters will eventually call each other by their first names (gasp!) with impassioned, shaky voices that can say every phrase except “I love you” out loud. WE GET IT. Stiff upper lips and all that.

File Under: Big Eyes, Hallow Cheeks, & Ripped Hearts (and terrible titles)
