About this listen

Virgil Flowers kicked around for a while before joining the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. First it was the army and the military police, then the police in St. Paul, and finally Lucas Davenport brought him into the BCA, promising him, "We'll only give you the hard stuff."

He's been doing the hard stuff for three years now, but never anything like this.

In the small town of Bluestem, a house way up on a ridge explodes into flames, its owner, a man named Judd, trapped inside. There are a lot of reasons to hate him, Flowers discovers. In fact, he concludes, you'd probably have to dig around to find a person who doesn't despise Judd.

And that isn't even why Flowers came to Bluestem. Three weeks before, there'd been another murder, two, in fact, a doctor and his wife, the doctor found propped up in his backyard, both eyes shot out. Flowers knows two things: this wasn't a coincidence, and it had to be personal.

But just how personal is something even he doesn't realize, and may not find out until too late. Because the next victim may be himself.

Critic reviews

"An adrenaline rush peppered with laugh-out-loud moments.” (Booklist)

“A book that will keep you turning pages, guessing, and completely immersed - and engrossed - in whatever Sandford wants to throw at you. It’s a great ride, and Sandford proves that sometimes it’s not the character, it’s not the series, it’s the writer.” (The Post and Courier)

A Great Narrator

Fantastic narrator! I love the he reads with the right amount of inflection and doesn't need to change is voice to make the characters come alive. No weird female voices.

The Man in the Moon

I've always been amazed by Sanford's story telling and ability weaving multiple sub-plots within and around the major theme. Suspenseful, fast paced, and sprinkled with humor and tragic events this is amazing. I hope the other books in this series are equally entertaining.

A good listen!

Love the Virgil Flowers character and looking forward to hearing more! Time to semi retire Davenport as main character.

4/5

Decent storytelling. Wished he would’a dove MORE into Minnesota related small details.

Personally, could do with a little less objective descriptions of the women in these novels. But overall, a fun and easy read.

Liked Virgil's persona

Loved the story. The narrator was okay kinda mellow which was perfect for Virgil but it was a struggle to keep track of who the other characters were as his voice was similar for them and when they had conversations I lost track of who said what.

a little testosteroney

there is some locker room talk, and sex, but not too porny. all the same, I don't feel it was necessary or added anything to the story. the story itself was pretty good. I prefer more twists and suspense, but I might listen to another one.

Difficult to Listen

Would you try another book from John Sandford and/or Eric Conger?

Probably not.

Would you recommend Dark of the Moon to your friends? Why or why not?

I found it difficult to listen to this story. The reader read it verbatim. As in "he said: "take me there", and then 'she said': "it's this way".'he said': "up this road', then 'he said': "which way". All throughout the book. No change in the voices to indicate which person was talking---just the he said, she said type dialogue.

What didn’t you like about Eric Conger’s performance?

I didn't like it!

Did Dark of the Moon inspire you to do anything?

No.
