About this listen

Jeannine appeared in the room across from Mary. Her face was streaked with tears and she was visibly trembling. “Mary, I remembered,” she cried. “I remembered and it was awful.”

The time has finally come for Mary to investigate Jeannine’s murder. As all clues point to someone in Bradley’s old neighborhood, Mary and Ian move into the former Alden residence and pose as newlyweds to set Mary up as bait for the killer. With Stanley and Rosie at their side, they expose the darkness hidden in the depths of Bradley’s old neighborhood.

dark in places loved it

This one is a bit hard to read in places because of the darkness of our bad guy.
Some things were not fully explained.
I loved it though and laughed heartily in places.
on to the next one.

A Heroine deserving of Respect

What made the experience of listening to Darkness Exposed the most enjoyable?

The entire Mary O'Reilly paranormal mystery series is well worth listening to. Figuring out the villain and their twisted motivations is delicious, while the heroes and heroines are all people you would want to know. In today's day and age, it is so refreshing to hear stories without a lot of gratuitous sex, vulgarity, and unnecessary violence that are STILL supremely entertaining.

Which scene was your favorite?

Cannot tell you my favorite scene without serious spoilers, but it is toward the climax of the story and I imagine it will be MOST PEOPLE'S favorite "Y...E...S..!!!" Moment.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The moving parts are always when apologies are made and forgiveness extended, because all of the main characters are people you would LOVE TO KNOW.

Any additional comments?

I am only reviewing this one book, but so far the entire series has been terrific. Much praises to Ms. Reid's storytelling abilities.

Chapter 24 warning!!!

I LOVE this series. However, Chapter 24 should have a warning, for moms or pregnant women! It's in the middle. It will make you sick as a pregnant woman/mom. Just a heads up. Still fantastic writing, and makes perfect sense. Just a heads up would be nice.....

Love the premise but....

Yes I keep buying these. Tip to other listers struggling with this narrator: speed up her voice to 1.25 or 1.5.

Author: inexperienced, makes up facts. Why is a Scottish guy complaining about adjusting to cold weather??? The climate of Scotland is much colder, much more dreary than Illinois <eyeroll>. Do some basic research, Terri.

Spoiler alert:

A lot of other inconsistencies that reveal how young/naive the writer is. No way in hell any mother would be able to pass on to the other side without knowing their child is ok. The fact that the unborn child was never something Jeanine brought up in all of these books really takes away from the believability of the story. The number one priority of a mother would be the baby. Where is my baby? Find my baby.

The author needs to do a lot more research about what she doesn't know such as labor, motherhood, military, police work instead of making up stuff.

Mary is a virgin....what??? With all of her accomplishments, she would have to be late twenties early thirties, but this is orderliness fantasy tale writing Mary as early twenties being a former Chicago cop. Come on.

The male dialogue....just no. No man would have say half this crap. The actions and activity are spot on but the dialogue is more like a children's cartoon. The author needs more life experience to write better characters.

Sigh. Still buying the next book. Love the series despite its flaws. Send to me for proofreading,
Would be happy to help.

Very Dark

If you could sum up Darkness Exposed in three words, what would they be?

Surprisingly dark and Sexy.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I like Mike the best because of his humor and it was a good counterpoint to the darkness of this novel.

Which scene was your favorite?

The scene with Gary talking to the refrigerator (do not want to spoil this).

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The realization about the fire chiefs children.

Any additional comments?

I think that this is the darkest of this series. I found it to be much more interesting than her other novels and the character development is progressing nicely. There were some interesting twists in this one that she did not have in her other books and a maturity that was lacking in the other books. I really liked this one and I am willing to listen to the next book. Hope it is as good!

Trigger Warning

You should be aware before you listen that there are scenes of fairly graphic sexual assault. This was a resolution to one of the major story lines, so that was satisfying. The performance is different to listen to.
