About this listen

La Rochelle, France, 1661. Fierce Protestant Isabelle is desperate to escape persecution by the Catholic King. Isabelle is tortured and harassed, her people forced to convert to the religion that rules the land. She risks her life by helping her fellow Protestants, which is forbidden by the powers of France. She accepts her fate—until she meets a handsome Catholic soldier who makes her question everything.

She fights off an attack by a nobleman, and the only way to save herself is to flee to the colony of Canada as a Daughter of the King. She can have money, protection, and a new life—if she adopts the religion she’s spent a lifetime fighting. She must leave her homeland and the promises of her past. In the wild land of Canada, Isabelle finds that her search for love and faith has just begun.

Based on the incredible true story of the French orphans who settled Canada, Daughter of the King is a sweeping tale of one young woman’s fight for true freedom. Kerry Chaput brings the past to life, expertly weaving a gripping saga with vivid historical details. Jump back in time on a thrilling adventure with an unforgettable heroine.

This is a well written, fictional story that takes place in a setting of actual historical events. I really enjoyed the book and I appreciated learning some history along the way. I was perplexed by the choice of narrator though. She used an odd inflexion as she read that reminded me of how one would read a story to a young child. I am glad I listened to the end for the sake of the story.

Great story but better to read vs listen

Loved this audiobook. Kerry Chaput does a wonderful job telling the story of the main characters journey through oppression, across two different continents and multiple cultures. Highly recommend.

I loved this book, the story was terrific and the narration impeccable. Lots of history I was unaware of. Highly Recommend.

Beautiful and Breathtaking Story

I love historical pieces especially with strong, female protagonists. However, the narrator has a weird cadence. She pauses places that are not normally paused and stresses words which are not normally stressed. AND, production really dropped the ball when a baby came into the recording studio and a woman called her away. Because of these things, I'm not getting the sequel.

Narration- The writer does have a nice voice (thus the 2 stars), but the reading was wooden. When I say reading, I mean she read the book, she did not perform it. There was no differentiation in voices for different characters. There were editing errors, such as the narrator telling someone to stop making noise. I nearly did not finish due to the narration, but I could not return it and I was not about to waste money.

The story-
I love finding historical fiction that does not take place during WW1 or WW2. The subject matter was fascinating, which made me finish despite the writing. The writing was rough- very immature with little subtlety. The writing was overwrought with constant big feelings and big moments to excess.

Poor narration, overwrought writing

My 12 yr old granddaughters could narrate far better than this. Monotone, no voice acting, often no pause or change between scenes or people, so as to leave one confused as to who is speaking. She does have a full resonant voice, just not trained in how to use it. I paid for the book, so I listened and the story was just strong enuf to carry me thro. I'll read the next on kindle if it has same narrator.

A good story, pulled down by poor narration.

This is one of the worst audiobooks I have listened to. It is shallow and inexpertly read. I would like to return it for credit.

Bad reading of a badly disguised romance novel!
