About this listen

428 BCE. Athens is roiling with intrigue about Pericles’ successor. Were it days ago, Timarcus would be at its center. But Kore has unexpectedly returned to him after seven years of separation and he is once again besotted. But as quickly as she has returned, she is gone, struck down by Apollo’s gentle arrow. Yet if it was a natural death, why can he not feel her presence as his beliefs promise?

Instead he is haunted by images of Kore’s shade weeping, unable to pass to Elysium’s bright fields. As Timarcus hunts for the truth, suspicion soon points to General Cleon, Athens' ruthless new ruler. Should Timarcus denounce the most powerful man in Athens, bringing exile or worse upon himself to avenge Kore?

As he unravels the astounding secret about her death, the humbling gods make him understand that the two of them never had a say in what befell them. They had always been at the mercy of the Daughters of Nyx who weave the fate of men.

As humans, we believe we make our own fate, but the Daughters of Nyx were fickle and wove the fate of mankind to their own whims. Set in Greece in 428 BCE, Timarcus and Kore discovered just how fickle the Daughters could be when Kore was ripped away yet once again from Timarcus. Determined to find and bring her killer to justice, Timarcus learns just how little control he has over his life and destiny.

The author, Diane Bonavist, writes descriptively allowing her listeners to visualize the characters and Ancient Greece vividly. Bonavist knows how to draw out the listener's imagination and does so. Her characters are well developed in a slow and deliberate style.

The narrator, DJ Holte provides an easy listening voice giving the right amount of inflection and passion in his tone. The listeners can hear the frustration, passion, and sense of loss in the voice of Timarcus. Holte has a smooth cadence as well and speaks clearly.

This is a rich book of fiction carefully woven with history and beliefs. Not a long audiobook but one you will want to hear in one sitting.
