Publisher's summary

Maine Game Warden Mike Bowditch finds himself in a life-or-death chase in this next thriller in the best-selling mystery series by Edgar Award nominee Paul Doiron, Dead by Dawn.

Mike Bowditch is fighting for his life. After being ambushed on a dark winter road, his Jeep crashes into a frozen river. Trapped beneath the ice in the middle of nowhere, having lost his gun and any way to signal for help, Mike fights his way to the surface. But surviving the crash is only the first challenge. Whoever set the trap that ran him off the road is still out there, and they’re coming for him.

Hours earlier, Mike was called to investigate the suspicious drowning of a wealthy professor. Despite the death being ruled an accident, his elegant, eccentric daughter-in-law insists the man was murdered. She suspects his companion that day, a reclusive survivalist and conspiracy theorist who accompanied the professor on his fateful duck-hunting trip - but what exactly was the nature of their relationship? And was her own sharp-tongued daughter, who inherited the dead man’s fortune, as close to her grandfather as she claims? The accusations lead Mike to a sinister local family who claim to have information on the crime. But when his Jeep flies into the river and unknown armed assailants on snowmobiles chase him through the wilderness, the investigation turns into a fight for survival.

As Mike faces a nightlong battle to stay alive, he must dissect the hours leading up to the ambush and solve two riddles: which one of these people desperately want him dead, and what has he done to incur their wrath?

Best Bowditch Yet?

Having read or listened to every book in the Bowditch series this one is definitely among my favorites . The story line develops in a unique parallel style from beginning to end. The level of pain Mike endures is borderline unbelievable at times but it is a fiction after all. Enjoy!

Excellent story

Very suspenseful, I could not put it down; the narrator did a great job with the characters as well.

Hold on tight! A wild ride!

Holy smokes! This was a great listen! I read other reviews where people didn't like flipping back and forth in the timeline, but I thought it was a very effective style of delivering the story. Henry Leyva performed this effect to a tee - just with his reading of the chapter number did I know where we would be in the timeline. Such a tremendous job!

So far I have absolutely loved this series. Bravo Paul Doiron!

Not my favorite Mike Bowditch Story

I didn’t care for the way the story kept going back and forth in time. It was rife rife with relentless pursuit and survival without enough much actual storyline. I’ll keep reading the series in hopes the storylines get back to normal.

May be the best Mike Bowditch story to date!

This book hooks you from the very beginning and never lets you go! By dividing up the chapters into two different time frames, Doiron keeps the action at high level while also letting Mike investigate and build his case. When you consider that the time frame for the bulk of the story is less than 24 hours, it is an incredible feat of story telling. Kudos to Paul Doiron for a great installment in an excellent series! I cannot wait for the next one!

Also, I love Henry Leyva as the voice of Mike Bowditch so I hope they never change narrators and I'm glad the romantic storyline appears to be moving the way I've been hoping it would go.

Gripping, suspenseful, and heartwarming.

Usually I am not a fan of plots that switch back-and-forth from past the present. However, one was masterfully accomplished, resulting in a story that, from start to finish, kept readers on the proverbial edge of their seats! Mike Bowditch is back and he is better than ever!

Best Book Yet!!!

I've had the privilege to have listened to all of Doiron's books and find this one to be his best book of the series. So far this year I've listened to 152 books and this one would be in the top five easily, maybe even the top two. The author's ability to paint the state of Maine in words is awesome and his ability to make me feel the characters are individuals I know is at times chilling. I recommend if a listener has not yet listened to this narrator do this series they are missing some of the best on the audible book market. I don't say this often about books, but this is a work that should not be missed.
