When Dead Detective Seamus is asked to investigate the death of wealthy businessman William Dunbar, he's more than willing. Seamus finds the Afterlife pleasant but a little boring and looks forward to chances to return to Life and learn why murder victims died and who is responsible.
This time there's an additional request: Will he take a detective-in-training along? Reluctantly he meets Mildred, who seems charming if a little headstrong. They agree to work the case together, with Seamus in full command.
Suspects for Dunbar's murder include his family and staff, notably his beloved grandson Bud, who was with him when he fell from a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan. There's chemistry between Bud and Scarlet, a household employee, and Seamus wonders why they work so hard to keep it hidden. To his disgust, Mildred focuses on Dunbar's adopted granddaughter Brodie, a problem child devastated by the death of her beloved "Gramps." Brodie thinks no one on earth cares about her now, and Mildred insists she alone can convince Brodie to go on. Seamus is irritated with Millie's disregard for the rules of non-interference with the living and with himself for ignoring his instincts about her. If a disembodied spirit had the capability, he'd kick himself for bringing her along.
Despite Mildred's well-meant efforts, which create both humor and trouble, Seamus continues the investigation.
Events soon spin out of control. A kidnapping leads to a desperate chase toward the Straits of Mackinac, where Brody and Bud find themselves in peril on the Mackinac Bridge.
Will Mildred become a lost soul? Will Brodie find the will to survive? Can Seamus help his host defeat the killer, or does his presence make things worse? Nothing is certain except the dire possibility that more innocent people will end up dead for the money.

The author is masterful at creating characters that are both interesting and believable. Also wonderful are the descriptions of the landscape, and environment. You really feel like you're there on a fog wrapped bridge.
The Narrator was brilliant, portraying each character In a unique way that suited the personality.
When the story wrapped up it was sad to see it end.
I think that this has been my favorite book that I have listened to for a long time and I really hope it is one of a series. If it is not then I hope the author considers another book. I was given this book in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.
This is a unique and extremely well-written mystery not to be missed!

Having said that, it is still a solid four star listen and I would recommend it to others who love mysteries. I love Peg Herring's paranormal twist to it. I would imagine that if you have read or listened to the first book that you probably already know what I am talking about. For those who haven't, I won't give it away.
JoBe Cerny does a good job narrating the characters in the book, even if the voice of Brody is less than stellar. I thought it was a bit cartoonish for my tastes. Other characters sound like emphysema patients that are still smoking (with their gravelly voices). I couldn't do any better so I will give him four stars as well.
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review!
A murder mystery with a paranormal twist!

Everything about this story was so well done. I loved Millie, the new addition & Seamus's partner on this mission. Gramps is also such a stand up great guy that you will be cheering for justice in his honor the whole time! The story itself hops around so you have to pay attention to keep up, but the benefit of getting to hear all the different angles from each character is worth it!
This story is paranormal in that Seamus and Millie are in the afterlife and hop into a humans mind to investigate a mystery, however it's not over the top. I'm not into the fantasy or sci-fi genre at all & I still really enjoyed this. I received this book in exchange for an honest review & I look forward to reading the next book in this series when made available on Audible.
A cozy paranormal mystery!
