About this listen

Rori Maitland has lived her life the way she's wanted it. After retiring from MI6, she's her own woman, with few friends and no husband. That's the way she bloody well prefers it. After all, her job is hardly normal.

Ian Kinncaid, master of disguise, has been estranged from his family for well over a decade. With his deep cover blown, he now needs a safe place to put the little girl he saved from the Czech underground. But the shadows cloak enemies and trust comes at too high a cost.

Favorite of the series! A+ rating...

My Review:
Overall.... 4.75
Performance... 4.75
Story.... 4.75
Yes! Ian...I have been waiting for his story for so long and it was so worth the wait. OMG, this book was so good!

Ian has shown up in all the books in this series, but we've never really known how he became estranged for the family...only that he is just as loyal as the other Kinncaid men and willing to do WHATEVER he needed to save their women and protect his brother's families and has helped his brothers time and again. In this book, all those questions were answered. The book began with the fight between Ian and his father, Jock, that resulted in him getting kicked out of the family...and while I knew what that probably entailed...reading the details of the fight and the results broke my heart for Ian. He was so young...and did nothing wrong. Jock...grr. But on the flip side, it was nice to have some insight into Jock and his realizing how deeply he betrayed and hurt his son by his actions and how that led to the man he became.

And the man he became is the heart of this book. Ian works for the government and has been undercover in Russia for five years, doing unspeakable things...but doing good things whenever he can. When the book begins, he is tired, worn out, and heartsore. He's about through with this job...it's gone on for too long and he simply doesn't care anymore. He's in danger of losing himself if he continues. He's also had a hit put out on him...Raven is coming after him.

Raven is Rori and she quickly discovers that Ian...or Dmitri...is not the man he appears to be and they begin to work together to save a young girl from a life of sexual slavery. To do so, they have to get her somewhere safe and the best way to do that is to pose as her parents and for the first time in a very long time, Ian begins to hide in plain sight...his new cover...Ian Kinncaid, with his wife Rori, and their newly adopted 4 yo daughter, Darya. But they both have many, many bad people out there who would like to see them all dead.

So freaking good...I'm telling you, this book was amazing. From page one, it jumped into the action and both Ian and Rori can kick butts and take names. I love, love, loved that she was just as tough and fearsome as him. It made her the perfect match for him. She also completely understands the world he's come from and the sacrifices he's had to make. I'm telling you...she was perfect for him. When he had his migraines, she and her actions, simply made me fall in love with her. She is awesome. She also has her own insecurities...especially when it comes to little Darya. I loved how she won Rori over.

I'm telling you...everything about this story was so good. It was an intricately woven Romantic Suspense that covered the world of politics, but still managed to include the entire Kinncaid clan. And Quinlan...OMG, the twists that involved his character. *sob*... just broke my heart for him. This entire series has been good, but this particular book went so far above the already, very high, bar. It was a great book and I continue to be amazed by Johanna Parker's incredible skill as a narrator. Her range of voices is PERFECTION and she does an amazing job, especially considering how many scenes she has to do with a huge cast of characters. They are all easily distinguishable during the dialogue. She is amazing...simply amazing narration.

This was the best yet!

I loved Ian and Rory's story. It was deep and gritty and at times heartbreaking where little Saris was concerned, yet wonderfully sweet and fulfilling. A very well written story.

YAY a Black Heroin !!

I was waiting for Ian's story since he first appeared in book 1. I simply love the Kinncaid's and Johanna Parker is slowing becoming one of my favorite narrators! I love how each story is so different and the love and strength of the family how they all ways stick together. Even though Rori is only half black and British it was so refreshing to see an author take a chance to go where most won't go!

So Good

I really like this series but I have to say, Deadly Games, is the best. Ian's story was so dark and intriguing. It really draws you in and you don't want to stop listening until you have completed the story. As always Johanna's narration was fantastic.

Nice Surprise!

I don't remember why I started a series with the fourth book, but I'm glad I did. I'm always on the lookout for new-to-me romantic suspense authors and this fast-paced story hit the spot. A couple of burned out, disillusioned black operatives spark off each other big time while international assassins and various bad guys try to take them out. I loved Rori and Ian, I loved the modern day Cold War backdrop, and I loved the way they took the leap into trusting each other. Intricately plotted and perfectly paced with a solid romance at its core.

Johanna Parker is one of my favorite narrators in romantic suspense. Really enjoyable story enhanced by an especially good narrator.

A CHILL/THRILL CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE

For those of us following this entertaining series we're finally treated to sexy, hot, Alpha brother Ian's story and, as you become immersed in all the intrigue, passion and danger you learn what made Ian walk out on all his family 13 years ago, where he's been ever since and what motivates him now.

Ian (aka The Reaper) is deep undercover working for a crime boss in Prague when there's a leak and his cover is blown, added to that there's also a Contract out on him….. in walks Rori (aka Raven) a beautiful, smart and lethal assassin. But they meet during a raid on a child porn ring (very emotional) where they rescue a traumatised little 5/6 yr old girl whose story will really pull at your heart strings. Things go from bad to worse as they try to outwit and destroy the enemy, protect themselves and all the Kinncaid family but one villain manages to get a little too close and the consequences are dramatic.

This is such a well-written action-packed story that hooks you right in as the emotionally damaged H/H try to defeat the villains, learn to trust each other, tie up loose ends all whilst being drawn to each other and each hoping for that impossible, but dreamed of, HEA ending. There's humor, suspense, twists, danger, sex, great characters and romance in this emotional listen that tells of the power of love and the healing abilities a close family can provide…. even if you don't feel worthy of it.

Worth a credit? This has slightly more action and focuses a little less on the romance but still a very creditworthy purchase. This could be a stand-alone listen with only slight appearances and references to characters and events from previous books but, IMHO, I'm sure that once you've listened to this you'll want to download all the rest.

LONG AWAITED & NOT DISAPPOINTED !!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

YEP, definitely. That said, I would recommend the series and that they be read or listened to in order. They all could be stand alone, however, each book refers to the Kinncaid brothers and family and one book leads into another.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Ian. I have long awaited his story. I was always drawn to, when he was referred to in most of the books, the dark intrigue surrounding him, the hero and savior aspect of him, but also the almost shadowed phantom he seemed to be.

What about Johanna Parker’s performance did you like?

She always does a really good job.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes. I always laugh at Ian's antics when they are humorous, but in this book I got emotional around "the little girl and her story". (Don't want to spoil anything)

Any additional comments?

Keep 'em coming Ms. Clark.

Wow!

this book is fast-paced from the beginning so the opening can be a little confusing if you're not paying attention. however, such a great story. not your typical romance. there is actually a storyline to it and I appreciate that

Great

I really liked this book and would recommend this book. I wish this book was a movie or TV show. It had a great storyline and sexual storylines. It touched on human trafficking and abuse on children. I liked how it dealt with real life issues.
