About this listen

Surrounded by war, stalked by murder, can she stay alive?

October 1940. Livvy Redmond is thrilled to receive an invitation to a country house party away from the Blitz. There she hopes to help her husband overcome his injuries from fighting in France. But excitement turns to horror when she stumbles across two members of the house party—murdered.

Indebted to her hostess, Livvy attempts to catch the killer. No one is who they seem, and the party goers leave her with more questions than answers.

Somewhere close, the killer waits in the shadows to stop her.

This series just gets better with every book. I discovered this series last week and binge read all 10 books. The first 10 books span a period of around 2 years beginning in 1938 with tensions in Europe building as "Herr Hitler" and his Nazi party dismantle European alliances, families, and individual lives. Livvy captivated me from the first book and never disappointed. She is a newspaper reporter/spy/amateur detective rolled into one, as well as a paradox who is both a product of her time and ahead of it. Her intelligence, integrity, and drive are inspiring, even when those very characteristics are ignored or criticized. Adam is her perfect match, and together they embody the "Greatest Generation" that put not just king and country, but justice, ahead of their own wellbeing. Ms. Parker does an excellent job of recreating the atmosphere and detail of the pre-WWII and WWII era in Britain, including the conflicting relationships of individuals caught in the political machinations of nations on the brink of and/or at war, and then weaving tales of espionage and murder mystery together into compelling stories that I cannot put down. The other characters, whether recurring or not, are well developed, and the mysteries are complex and engaging. I am particularly fond of Livvy's cousin Abby, her boss (or one of them) - Sir Henry, and the featured friends in this book - Rosalie and Thorpe - who we first met in Book 8, as I recall. These are all people you want to meet, spend time with, and get to know. On the other hand, there are also more than enough characters you will love to hate and who will step on your last nerve (such as Livvy's dad). The beauty is that they all are part of what pulls you in and keeps you immersed in wonderful stories. I cannot wait for Book 11 that is due out in April.
