About this listen

Death Magic opens with Special Agent Lily Yu in Washington, DC, with her fiancé - lupi Prince Rule Turner - to testify before a Senate subcommittee about her role in the magical collapse of a mountain last month. She is not there to tell them about the strange legacy she carries from that event - or about the arcane bond between her and Rule - or what her boss in Unit Twelve of the FBI’s Magical Crimes Division is really up to. She sure won’t tell them that the lupi are at war with an Old One who wants to remake humanity in her own image.

Lily is managing the conflict between her duty as an officer of the law and the need for secrecy pretty well...until the rabidly anti-magic senator who chairs that committee is murdered. The line between right and wrong, always so clear to her, becomes hopelessly blurred as events catapult them all toward disaster, and prophecies of a cataclysmic end to the country she loves and serves - and to the entire race of lupi - seem well on their way to being fulfilled.

Performed by Colleen Delany, Nanette Savard, Eric Singdahlsen, Matthew Bassett, Tara Giordano, Christopher Graybill, Nick DePinto, Kurt Elftman, David Jourdan, Bradley Smith, Deidra Starnes, Ken Jackson, Terence Aselford, Patrick Bussink, James Konicek, Kimberly Gilbert, Michael Glenn, David Harris, Jacob Yeh, Margie Tompros, David Coyne, Gabriela Fernandez-Coffey, Casie Platt, Dylan Lynch, Jonathon Church, Thomas Hogan, Sunny Lasskey, Barbara Pinolini, Evan Casey, Gary Telles, Patrick Stratton, Elliott Dash.

Good dang series!

Wow! This series is just getting better and better! I'm still not bored of Rule and Lily! But there needs to be more relationship drama now. They're just too perfect.

Mouth Noises Abound

I adore Graphic Audio’s take on audiobooks… usually.

In this book the characters have been obsessed with coffee in exponential amounts more than before. In nearly every scene change they mention going to the coffee pot, or refilling the coffee pot, or how a room was a good choice because it had a coffee, or or or. I’ve heard of word filler, but endless talk about coffee does not good writing make.

The worst part, however—and what has made the repetitive coffee mentions so very apparent—is that when coffee is mentioned, it is often followed by crystal clear, wet, slurping noises. Evidently “dramatized” audio includes the drama of slurping your morning brew, the subsequent 22 afternoon brews, and the 14 evening brews. In one scene Cullen slurps several times with 10-15 sec intervals before Lily asks for some and joins in. It feels like every couple minutes you get a big sloppy slurp. I don’t need moist mouth noises with my werewolves and Wiccans. Terrible audio editing choice.
