About this listen

Life’s a b*tch-but what comes after isn’t much better.

Jade Blackwell, a paranormal reaper, helps supernaturals cross over after death. Her job comes with lots of rules-but not following them is kind of her thing...until it ends up involving her in something much deadlier than she ever imagined.

With the protective veil fading away, demons are crossing realms and impregnating humans, and Jade’s best friend is among their victims. She’s determined to save her friend, even if it means working with Cole Masters, a dangerous demon halfling and notorious gun-for-hire.

But time is running out to fix the barrier and find a demon cure. With supernaturals everywhere in danger, and the balance between good and evil tipped for the worst, Jade must choose between her own eternal afterlife...or the living world she so desperately wants to be a part of.

Either way, death is coming.

The explosively popular urban fantasy genre meets the Otherworld Series in this spunky new grim reaper tale by RONE Award winning author, Harper A. Brooks.

I LOVED IT!

I absolutely loved it! This book caught my attention from the very beginning and held it throughout the entire book. This book is full of action, adventure, drama and suspense. The narration was superb and gave the story that extra flair! The author did an amazing job with the character builds and plot. This was my first book by this author but definitely not my last! I look forward to reading more books in this series (can't wait)! I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

A Nice Story

I got this story via audiobook boom and this is my voluntary review. This story started out strange and got stranger as it went along. The narrator was very good. The strange was not a bad strange but a different strange. The grim reaper is not just a man in a black cape with a scythe and smoke. It is a group of people. The leader is a bit strange as well and disappears suddenly. His second in charge becomes the leader and they are a corporation. The ending made sense and was complete but lead to the next book.

Really enjoyed

I really enjoyed this fantasy/urban mystery story. I loved the protagonist and her rule-breaking ways. Secondary characters Cole, Sean, Kay,and the others were great accompaniment, too. I hope successive books will be done on audio, too, as the narration really added to the excitement, adventure, and enjoyment of the story. I really want to know what happens in the rest of the story. There is obviously something bigger going on. I would like to see if Cole turns into a better person without his demon side, too.

Great narration! It really gave the characters personality.

A new twist for a reaper story line.

I enjoyed listening to Eugenie Danglar narrate this book. She has an adaptive voice that makes it easy to tell the character apart. The characters are very likable and I can't wait to see what happens next. I will defiantly look for more Harper A Brooks books as well as those narrated by Eugenie Danglar. This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review

Reaper Magic

Jade is a reaper who really doesn’t really like to reap. She does however like to help and protect her friends. She spends most of her time in this book battling demonic creatures so there’s plenty of action and edge of your seat suspense. Great narration and nicely paced storyline and will definitely pick up book two. I received a free copy of this audiobook from audiobookboom and I’m leaving this honest review.

ok story, good narration

SPOILER WARNING

At one point, I jokingly referred to this plot as "seeking magical means to a supernatural, medically necessitated abortion." Seriously, the whole book is searching for a way to make a woman who is pregnant, not pregnant anymore. True, at the last moment the author tacks on that the baby can be saved, but that's literally a line or two in a whole book of 'how to save my friend from having this baby that she didn't plan and will probably kill her.'

If I believed the author set out to write a parable about body autonomy and a woman's right to choose, I'd call this a raging success. I don't actually think this though. I don't think Brooks had such didactic goals. Doesn't mean it can't be read that way if you want.

Beyond that, I thought the book was ok. I liked the characters and the writing was fine, but I also thought an entire book of the heroine being saved by magical powers she didn't know she had, didn't know anything about or how to use felt an awful lot like a whole series of due ex machina (which is dissatisfying when it shows up once, let alone half a dozen times). I also thought a lot of Jade's internal monologue got redundant.

All in all, not bad, but not a huge winner either.

Note: I recieved an audible code for this book. I chose to listen and review it.

Great Audible Edition/Narration - Good Story

3.5. A liked this. I requested a copy of the audiobook and was granted it in exchange for an honest review. I was happy to be able to access the text copy via Kindle Unlimited ... but I'll admit I never turned to it (I really like having the text copy to quickly skim over things if I feel like I missed something in the audio, or to continue on reading myself at times). I really liked the narrator here and thought she did a great job with the voices (although there were a couple voices I didn't love, like Laurence or Tristan). Great enunciation and inflection and a good job with overall editing (a few too many audiobooks of late have odd pauses by the narrator or in the recording).

As for the story itself - I've read (and watched) a few things with a reaper idea. This was fun and casual and conversational. There was a part early on that made me laugh-out-loud ... combo of the writing and the narrator, when Jade is talking so someone and gets "censored", unable to actually say the word "released" ... it just came across and tickled my funny bone the way the narrator swallowed and distorted the end of the word. :) reloosed ;)

I rolled my eyes a little at the whole "Cole" thing, whenever Jade would admire his rippling muscles and such. It got a little Harlequin Romance/bodice ripper too.

I wasn't quite sure where the story was going. It kept my interest and kept me guessing. This book wrapped up pretty well, no cliff-hanger ... while staying open for the sequels. I'm not on the edge of my seat anxious to read them (I do have access to them via Kindle Unlimited if I wanted to read them myself). If the audio versions were included in Kindle Unlimited, or if I got a chance to get a free copy, I would definitely continue on...

I like the story but it was a little slow at first

I loved all the twists to the story and the characters finding her self but it was a little slow in some parts but I would recommend it to a friend.
