Critic reviews

"Johnson combines a vivid sense of the dailiness of life--and the way human relationships take root in that dailiness--with a sure--handed touch for jolting both his characters and his readers out of their comfort zones and deep into harm's way. It's hard to ask for more in a literary mystery." ( Booklist)

Simply the best

Craig Johnson is now my favorite author. This is the second of his books I've read and it even exceeds his first, Cold Dish. Johnson is an immensely talented writer. Aside from the good mysteries, he has created unforgettable characters and sense of place. He combines a fantastic wit with just enough warmth to make you care about the characters and the story. I'm not a writer, so I can't do it justice...

Finally, George Guidall does a _superb_ job of narrating this story. By God I think he was born for such a time as this. Don't think I've read a more perfect author and narrator combination (and i have read many, MANY audio books.)

Magnificent

Everything about this novel is amazing. Somehow Craig Johnson was a way of making the most mundane parts of Walt's life seem interesting. The plot overall is very compelling and the mystery isn't easily solved. There is actually some black hearted foes which will push Walt to his limits. All and all this is an amazing book.

Another winner

This is the 2nd in the series, and 2nd i've listened to. So glad that it kept the great mix of humor, personality, and plot... I'll keep reading this series and to me, there is no better compliment.

A life without friends

means death without company. Basque Proverb 741

These stories are so good. The character development is full and rich. George Guidell's voice fits all the characters like a fine glove.

An old woman dies and the mystery begins. Was it a natural death or murder? And if murder who would kill a harmless old woman?

This is my third time listening to this one. It amazes me that the story does not quite go the way I remember it. It is like listening to an entire new book each time. Well done Mr. Johnson.

Fell in love

I love this series. I fell in love with the characters and the ramblings. I could walk in to this world and feel at home. It has a slow even pace that keeps me captivated. I am in love with Henry & Walt. Yes, there are cases to solve but that is only part of this wonderful book that will have you laughing and smiling all the way through.

PERFECT BLEND OF VOICE & STORY & CHARACTER

I listen to an awful lot of books. When I saw the latest Longmire mystery was published, I looked it up and am so glad I started with this series at the beginning. I am totally entranced with Walt Longmire's character as interpreted by George Guidall. I saw an episode of a TV show based on the series and they got it ALL WRONG. I toil in those fields myself, and I can't believe producers didn't study Guidall's work and realize that he had created the guy who should star in the show--screenwriters should also have paid attention to Longmire's fabulous sense of humor. Let alone The Cheyenne Nation, Ruby, Vic, the whole crowd is just wonderful to listen to. Previously I knew next to nothing about the "new" West--now at least I have a starting point to learn more.I'm listening to As The Crow Flies now--and it's as great as the others.

Longmeier ! Best western Sheriff ever.

Craig Johnson's Walt Longmeier has the voice of the West, whether you're in Wyoming or New Mexico. He captures the voice of the people.

More than a Mystery - this is art

I love this series and I'm pacing myself. I honestly wish they were longer. Guidall is the perfect voice for these characters that call the Powder River home.
