Critic reviews

"Johnson combines a vivid sense of the dailiness of life--and the way human relationships take root in that dailiness--with a sure--handed touch for jolting both his characters and his readers out of their comfort zones and deep into harm's way. It's hard to ask for more in a literary mystery." ( Booklist)

On the face of it, the book didn't seem like my kind of mystery. Sherrif in Wyoming? Sounded a bit like a Tony Hillerman book. Tony Hillerman's books are good, don't get me wrong, but this book is really special. The characters are human and very real, not stereotypes, the plot unfolds naturally, the dialog is right on. Nice, dry humor (just my style). And there is a real, plausible mystery at the heart of the story. George Guidall, the narrator, reads everything with just the right touch of irony. I can't recommend this book enough.

What a wonderful find!

The Longmire books are so well written. I suspect this book would have been easier to read than listen to because the plot and cast of characters is complex, and, for me, hard to follow using auditory senses only. Otherwise, I would have awarded it more stars.

Great book. Enjoyed the characters (except the Maggy thing got boring --legs, lips and lipstick - her lines struck me as Harlequin Romance for Men) but it was a great plot. Kept my attention and I plan to get the others in the series.

great book

I usually love George Guidall's narration--older, avuncular sounding-- but I got half way through this great book and couldn't deal with his female voices sounding so much alike. Just too grating. Sorry to say I just checked and Guidall does all of Craig Johnson's books.

Can't deal with the narrator

I have listened to audiobooks a lot over the past twenty years. The tough part is finding the books. With this book I've found many books, the whole Longmire series. It's very well written. The plot unfolds very well, Craig can write with extremely descriptive language, and as a bonus, my favorite narrator does the whole series.

Great Discovery

I have listened to two others in the Longmire series and really enjoyed them all. It is not the kind of book I would sit down and read through but great for listening. I also like the television series!

Love the Longmire series

This book was fast paced, compared to the first book. Also it added more characters and relationships. I loved how the plot moved so fast that I barely knew I was near the end. The relationships between the characters grew, they seem so real, and one finds themselves invested in the characters and their well being. Also the book is strangely calming.

It just gets better...

Good story but it is the narrator who brings the story and characters to life. Enjoy throughly listening to the Longmire stories as audible books.

Love the narration.
