About this listen

While attending an exhibition at the Crystal Palace, young cook Kat Holloway is approached by a woman in distress. Lady Covington is a wealthy widow convinced that her entire family is trying to kill her. Kat feels compelled to help, so she escorts the lady home to discover whether she is delusional or in true danger.

When it quickly becomes apparent that the threat is all too real, Kat promises aid. Her charming confidant Daniel McAdam is busy infiltrating a plot against the Crown, and she worries he will not have time to lend his sleuthing expertise. This might be for the best, as Kat fears her growing emotional entanglement with Daniel can only lead to disaster. But soon, Kat faces a more serious threat when her involvement in both investigations plunges her into peril.

Great listen, but....

I enjoy this series, but it seems Daniel's voice is getting lower and lower and more gruff. It's so low sometimes I have to turn the volume up, but it's only when he's specifically talking to Kat. Why not just use the same voice when he talks to everyone else? All in all I still enjoyed it.

Good story

The only hang up I had was that some of the recording was funky. I also didn’t love the changes made to the male voices.

Excellent

These stories never cease to entertain and this one was excellent. Combining the day to day in the gentry and the working class

The narrator is great but agree her voice of Daniel is pretty low. But loved every minute!

Books listed out of order!!!

Audible has this book listed as number four in the series, but it is actually number five. I listened halfway through before I figured it out. There are new characters in this book and references to events from Murder in the East End. It was very confusing and annoying. I was also quite bothered by the change in the way the narrator voiced Daniel and a few other characters in this one. The change in Daniel's voice in particular is a pretty tough pill to swallow. Hopefully I will find Murder in the East End more enjoyable.

Agree with other reviewers...

... about the creepy male voices. Ms. Piazza did so narrating the other books - so disappointing. I also agree with some reviewers about the plots getting old. At least one couple needs to move forward!

Another amazing story!

I adore Kat Holloway, and the way Jennifer Ashley brings Victorian London through a cook's eyes to life. This latest installment in the Below Stairs mysteries had me guessing until the end. The supporting characters all add just the right amount of spice and I look forward to book 6!

Just as good as previous books in the series

As usual, the reader is excellent. The plot and characters continue to hold my interest, and I’m sure I’ll be reading more as they come out.

I love the series, but what happened to Daniel’s voice?

I have really been enjoying the Below Stairs Mystery series by Jennifer Archer. I give the series 5 stars.

However, I was glad to see that other reviewers had trouble hearing the narrator when she was voicing Daniel’s, or his brother’s, dialogue. I have been listening to the entire series, and this is the first book during which I was beginning to question my hearing. I hope the narrator reverts back to a voice for Daniel that is audible.

The narrator

I enjoyed this book. But for some reason the narrator changed the way she spoke the male voices. She spoke all these voices so low and quite I had to turn the volume up all the way. I almost gave up but decided to keep going. I am hesitant to purchase the next one.
