About this listen

A perfectly plotted crime is foiled by a runaway bank clerk as Inspector Littlejohn navigates impersonation, forgery, embezzlement...and a murder.

It was meant to be a fool-proof scheme. The victim was a recluse, cut off from the world after the death of his wife. Nobody would think it strange when they didn't see him. Nobody would make inquiries.

Yet, even the most meticulous of criminals can be caught out, especially if they don't leave room for human error.

Littlejohn and Cromwell find themselves with more than one mystery to unravel - but will they be able to find the elusive killer?

About Inspector Littlejohn

Inspector Thomas Littlejohn of Scotland Yard is a shrewd yet courteous sleuth who splits his time between quaint English villages, the scenic Isle of Man, and French Provinces. With a sharp tongue and a dry sense of humor, Littlejohn approaches his work with poise and confidence, shifting through red-herrings and solving even the most perplexing of cases.

A Whale of a Case

That’s how Inspector Littlejohn describes this one. It seems to have everything: a double murder, impersonation, a disappearance, forgery, embezzlement, “the whole shooting match”.

As usual with George Bellairs, the writing is crisp, the story never flags, and the characters live in your earbuds – due as much to Anthony Ferguson’s performance as to Bellair’s engrossing way of telling a story.

Good old fashioned mystery

Great reading and a fun mystery! Sometimes a little off the trail, but still very enjoyable. I’ll be looking for more George Bellairs.

Love George Bellairs and this production

Fun whodunnit with a great narrator. Love George Bellairs and the way he sets a number of his works on the Isle of Mann.

Enjoyable Who Done It

1950's British classic mystery. A good puzzle with a smart detective and a clever evil villain.

The killer is as slippery as an eel.

Liked it very much. The relentless pursuit, with the killer one step ahead. I was completely baffled to the end.
