About this listen
Following a mysterious explosion, the offices of Excelsior Joinery Company are no more; the three directors are killed and the peace of a quiet town in Surrey lies in ruins. When the supposed cause of an ignited gas leak is dismissed and the presence of dynamite revealed, Superintendent Littlejohn of Scotland Yard is summoned to the scene. But beneath the sleepy veneer of Evingden lies a hotbed of deep-seated grievances. Confounding Littlejohn's investigation is an impressive cast of suspicious persons, each concealing their own ax to grind.

The police investigate and stumble upon a body-the face smeared with theatrical make-up and a false mustache pasted neatly over the lip. Once the national news descends, Inspector Faddiman calls in Inspector Littlejohn to help him uncover the dark, hidden secrets in this quiet, provincial town. First published in 1944, Fell Murder sees E.C.R. Lorac at the height of her considerable powers as a purveyor of well-made and traditional detective fiction. The book presents a fascinating 'return of the prodigal' mystery set in the later stages of the Second World War, amidst the close-knit farmerfolk community of Lancashire's lovely Lune valley. Awful over the top narration.
Quite a clever story. Interesting characters however the narrator was too loud and far too involved with his characters voices. It was like being force fed. He has a wide range of voices but I’m more than capable of creating the scene in my minds eye with a simple schooled voice. Thanks anyway.

Involved classic detective story
I didn't feel any interest or sympathy for the many narcissistic, corrupt, or vicious characters in the story. The police were the good guys doing meticulous and plodding detection. They encountered only villains and their dupes in multiple shady deals. I have enjoyed other classic detective stories by this author, but found this one tedious and depressing.

The narration of this book was so poor as to make it painful to listen to. I have enjoyed listening to other George Bellairs books with a different narrator so this was esp disappointing.
