Publisher's summary

Life is good for DI Dan Hellier until the discovery of two headless, handless bodies buried in a bog on Dartmoor.

How can he identify the victims when nobody has reported them missing? The tension mounts when the death of a young man plunges Hellier into the murky world of the Garrett family. Could the peaceful, family-run Animal Rescue Centre really be a cover for murder and other criminal activity?

Hellier is about to learn just how far people will go to get what they want, as he races to catch a murderer before it’s too late.

If you are a fan of Joy Ellis, Faith Martin and LJ Ross, then you'll love Bernie Steadman's new West-Country Crime Mystery Series.

Please note this is a revised edition of a book previously published as Death and the Good Son by B. A. Steadman.

Didn't mesh with first book

This book was inconsitent with first book. First of all colleague who died in last book was on his way to retirement and in this book they go on and on about having to suddenly replace him when they would have already been actively looking since they knew he was leaving.. Secondly, we were left with Dan basically on probation for his loose police work and in this installment, he is some super sleuth leading a team but never explained how this happened. All the other characters were not reintroduced and we as readers were expected to assume we knew who thery were. I gave up and went with the flow but found myself liking Dan less and less as I read on. Also did not enjoy relationship with girlfriend, their banter is obnoxious and so is she. The murder mystery was definitely very intersting and complicated but bringing the two situations together was a bit rough/amateurish.
