About this listen

Vulkan lies in state beneath the Fortress of Hera, and yet many of his sons still refuse to believe that he is truly dead.

After a seemingly miraculous rescue by the Ultramarines, Artellus Numeon, once captain of the Pyre Guard, urges the other Salamanders on Macragge to leave Imperium Secundus and return their primarch's body to the home world of Nocturne - there to be reborn in the flames of Mount Deathfire. But Numeon grapples endlessly with his doubts and fears for the future of the Legion while their foes seek to carve out new destinies of their own....

Riveting!

I really liked how Nick Kyme properly conveyed how harrowing the Salamanders' pilgrimage was. Had me on the edge of my seat.

Great but...

kind of annoying how often it sets two people up to fight, both constantly described as beasts of combat and yet it's over in about 2 blows. other than that a good story

Vulkan Lives!

Salamanders all the way Baby! Persevering in any and every situation. The characters are very good and their growth feels real, the internal and external conflict is great! Vulkan Lives baby, above all else!

At points tedious

Without going into too much depth it feels as though a crucial point in the Horus heresy was throughly danced around and dragged out throughout this book. Although I wouldn’t describe the book as bad or boring it did feel a bit tedious at points.

Rollercoaster of a story but not in a great way.

This one kind of annoys me because there are some genuinely cinematic moments which are drowned out by repetitive boring dialogue.

There’s a scene on the salamander vessel that had me vividly remembering the movie Event Horizon and I think if the author had stuck with that concept for the majority of the book it would have worked great. The problem was that the writer ultimately decided to go the route of Avatar and it was underwhelming. Maybe it’s just not my style of book. At least it advanced the story of the Horus Heresy.
